Willem Dafoe At One Point in His Career Needed a “Stunt Penis” and The Reason Why is Nothing Short of Bragging

As a seasoned gamer with a knack for appreciating cinema, I must say that Willem Dafoe is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most intriguing characters, both on and off-screen. His versatility, spanning four decades, has earned him a unique place in the hearts of moviegoers worldwide.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say: Over four thrilling decades, I’ve been captivated by the versatile acting chops of Willem Dafoe. From indie flicks to big-budget franchises, and all the way to director’s pet projects, he’s earned a top spot in Hollywood respect.

Among the projects I was involved with, one that stands out is the film ‘Antichrist,’ released in 2009. This is a chilling art-horror production directed by Lars von Trier, featuring me alongside Charlotte Gainsbourg. The narrative revolves around a couple grappling with the loss of their young son due to an accident. In an attempt to heal, they retreat to a secluded forest cabin, where I encounter unsettling visions, and she displays increasingly violent, erotic, and masochistic behavior.

Although the film didn’t leave a lasting impression on American viewers, it gained significant international attention due to its graphic content, explicit nudity, and portrayal of aggressive sexual scenes. One particularly striking scene involved a full-frontal nudity display by the actor; however, it was discovered later that his genitalia wasn’t real.

Lars von Trier, the director, disclosed that they used a prosthetic penis for Dafoe’s character because his real one was excessively long, causing a potential distraction in the scene. Dafoe admitted that his genitals might have drawn too much attention away from the intended focus of the scene, demonstrating a modest approach.

Making that decision was wise since it could otherwise overshadow everything else in conversation. Clearly, Lars intends for the characters to have physical attributes, but it might divert attention unnecessarily.

Von Trier however didn’t mind his words when describing the unusual situation:

“He could only behave towards her in a certain manner, given his size; it’s quite substantial. In the movie, we needed to omit those specific sequences due to their explicit nature. A stand-in was used instead of him for these deleted scenes.

Surprisingly enough, this isn’t the first time his exposed self has caused disturbances and distractions during filming. In an amusing account shared with Mel Magazine, Willem Dafoe reminisced about an incident while shooting ‘The Last Temptation of Christ.’ During a nude scene as Jesus, his prominent male organ became noticeable when he was hanging on the cross for a wide shot. Director Martin Scorsese swiftly ordered someone to rectify the situation, but the Roman stuntmen refused to assist. Eventually, a helpful costume assistant climbed a ladder and discretely tucked it away again, enabling the scene to proceed smoothly.
