According to director Joseph Kosinski, if Tom Cruise had been cast as the main actor in the upcoming racing movie F1, the production process would likely have been significantly more thrilling, given Cruise’s unique approach to filming action sequences that creates a tense atmosphere on set compared to Brad Pitt’s style. (GQ Magazine interview)
According to Kosinski, Tom consistently operates at his maximum potential, yet he’s remarkably competent and highly proficient. Jerry Bruckheimer, the F1 director and producer, started developing the racing film starring Pitt during the post-production phase of Top Gun: Maverick, which was Cruise’s blockbuster hit that raked in an impressive USD 1.4 billion at the box office.
During that period, the notion of Cruise helming F1 briefly surfaced, yet it never materialized. Pondering over this hypothetical scenario, Kosinski mused, “Both possess undeniable driving talent. Admittedly, Tom might have given us a few more thrilling moments.
Several team members from Formula One (F1) had collaborated with Tom Cruise on Mission: Impossible movies before, and they were well-aware of his limits. Graham Kelly, the expert in action vehicles, expressed a firm viewpoint. “We would’ve ended up in an accident,” he humorously commented when asked about Tom Cruise replacing Brad Pitt in F1.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ll put it this way: “I’ve been in some high-pressure situations, but working alongside Tom takes it to another level. It’s intense, really intense, and as a car builder who often finds myself in the thick of things with him, it can be downright nerve-wracking.
Instead, Kelly pointed out that Pitt has a keen understanding of his own limitations. Moreover, he stated that Brad is receptive, acknowledges his capabilities, and wouldn’t hesitate to admit if a task is beyond him.
In my expertise as a lifestyle aficionado, allow me to share an interesting tidbit about cinema: Prior to the release of Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski was working on a racing movie that bore resemblance to Ford v Ferrari. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt had expressed interest in this project. Regrettably, the studio decided against it due to budgetary concerns. Eventually, James Mangold brought this film to life, with Christian Bale and Matt Damon gracing the silver screen instead.
Currently showing in cinemas is “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which has earned $200 million worldwide upon its release. Brad Pitt’s new film, titled “F1,” will premiere on June 27. With Pitt directing, the team promises a more seamless experience, at least from a production standpoint.
Who would you rather see behind the wheel in the F1 movie?
