The ‘Matrix’ series, a trailblazing science fiction saga, started with the release of its first movie in 1999. This film is renowned for its thought-provoking tale about the nature of reality, technology, and liberty, which has left an indelible mark on popular culture. Notable visuals such as the “bullet time” slow-motion sequences and the symbolic red pill/blue pill decision have become synonymous with this franchise.
These movies ignited profound discussions on philosophy, technology, and the nature of human thought, spawning numerous books, internet memes, and further films. Their impact continues to resonate in areas like fashion design, visual effects, and our collective understanding of virtual worlds and intelligent machines.
It looks like the franchise is being restarted, and it’s rumored that Will Smith might step into the part previously played by Keanu Reeves as Neo, a character he made iconic.
On his social media, Will Smith posted an enigmatic message hinting at a potential new Matrix undertaking, with him as the character Morpheus, known as Neo.

The video states the following:
Wake up Will.
1997 saw the Wachowskis presenting Will Smith with the opportunity to play Neo in The Matrix. However, Smith declined this offer, opting instead for the Wild West role. He felt it was a more suitable choice for him at that moment. Yet, one can’t help but wonder: How might The Matrix have been different if Will Smith had taken on the role of Neo?
Following ‘Resurrections,’ producer James McTeigue indicated that there were no immediate plans for further ‘Matrix’ films due to its open-ended conclusion potentially allowing for future developments. In April 2024, Warner Bros. disclosed a new ‘Matrix’ movie with Drew Goddard overseeing both writing and directing following an impressive pitch. This upcoming film will mark the first ‘Matrix’ production not directed by the Wachowskis, although Lana remains involved as an executive producer.
We don’t know whether that project is connected to Smith since almost nothing is known about it.
Back in March 2017, Warner Bros. initiated plans for a fresh ‘Matrix’ endeavor, contemplating a television series as an option. However, they ultimately decided to focus on a new movie instead. Zak Penn was tasked with the scriptwriting, and Michael B. Jordan emerged as a potential leading star.
At that point, the Wachowskis weren’t part of the project. Some concepts under consideration were a prequel featuring a younger Morpheus, stories centered around one of Morpheus’ descendants, or even a reboot for the franchise. By 2019, it was confirmed that the script would take place before the original films’ events, and Jordan showed interest but hadn’t yet committed to his role.
