As a dedicated follower and fan of both Will Smith and Quincy Jones, I found the anecdote about their collaboration on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song absolutely captivating! It’s fascinating to see how two titans of entertainment, with such distinct styles, came together to create something truly iconic.
In simpler terms, during an interview for a documentary series called “Black Comedy in America,” Will Smith shared that the comedic response from Quincy Jones to his Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme song was memorable. He explained that the version of the song that fans have been enjoying wasn’t originally planned to be the same one.
Credit for the original track goes to the late Quincy Jones, who gave Smith valuable feedback on it.
During a part of the documentary series, Smith openly stated that he disliked Jones’ interpretation of the song. Furthermore, Jones also described it as “nonsense.
Continuing the narrative, the rapper elaborated, “Now, Quincy proposed a theme tune, you know.” Notably, Quincy was renowned for his exceptional music production, having collaborated with legends such as Michael Jackson. However, Smith found the tune unappealing.
Additionally, it was disclosed that he proceeded to contact DJ Jazzy Jeff and express, “I’m at a loss for words. What should I even say?
DJ Jeff proposed to Will the idea of teaming up on a song and submitting it to the esteemed music executive posthumously. Upon receiving their joint creation for evaluation, the seasoned critic responded bluntly: “He remarked, ‘That’s decent. My work is garbage.’
The Grammy-winning musician claimed that the late producer stated the theme song to be “what it needs to be.”
In 1989, Smith had his initial encounter with Jones, an occasion marked by the suggestion from the Hitch actor regarding The Fresh Prince. This meeting was reminisced by him and shared in a recording for the latest VICE program, revealing his first experience with the father of seven.
He asserted, “Jones commented, ‘Dude, I watched your music videos. I’m a big fan of what you’re creating. Can you remind me of your rap name once more?’
When Smith revealed it was The Fresh Prince, Jones jokingly suggested, “Alright, great! Let’s go with that as the title for the show.
In the heart of the action, I was approached by the maestro himself, who slipped a script into my hands and challenged me to deliver an impromptu performance. With adrenaline pumping through my veins, I rose to the occasion and nailed it! The rest, as they say, is history – I secured a deal with none other than the legendary Quincy Jones.
A well-known music producer who had served in the military died in early November at the age of 91. Will Smith honored the deceased musician by penning a touching tribute, stating, “Quincy Jones embodies the essence of a guide, a parent, and a companion.
He furthe added, “He pointed me toward the greatest parts of myself. He defended me. He nurtured me. He encouraged me. He inspired me. He checked me when he needed to.”
Quincy Jones is survived by his seven children.
