Will Lady Gaga And Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker: Folie à Deux Have A Time Jump? Creator Todd Phillips Says THIS

As a dedicated follower of the DC universe, I have eagerly anticipated every twist and turn in the Joker’s story since Heath Ledger brought the character to life in The Dark Knight. Now, with Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie à Deux” set to premiere, my excitement has reached an all-time high.

The upcoming film “Folie à Deux” from director Todd Phillips, a follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster “Joker,” is causing quite a stir among fans. In this sequel, Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as the Joker, and Lady Gaga joins him as Harley Quinn. Lately, Phillips has shared some intriguing insights about the movie.

In the sequel to the film “Joker”, titled “Joker: Madness Shared”, the story unfolds two years after the initial movie’s events. Following his act of killing the beloved late-night host, Murray Franklin (portrayed by Robert De Niro), Arthur Fleck is now institutionalized in Arkham Asylum. There, he crosses paths with Harleen Lee Quinzel (played by Lady Gaga), another patient who is intrigued by his past life as the Joker. Choosing to forgo his medication due to her interest, Arthur finds himself immersed in a surreal realm of musical performances.

Todd Phillips shared additional insights about the upcoming movie in an interview with Variety. He disclosed that the concept for the film originated from a dream experienced by Joaquin Phoenix during the production of the first movie. In Folie à Deux, Arthur’s tunes lean towards romance, whereas Lee concentrates on themes of power.

The film is set to introduce turmoil into Gotham, as it delves into the musical portrayal of the intricate bond between the Joker and Harley. Director Phillips characterizes this movie as his most daring venture yet, expressing to Variety that “The aim of this production is to create an atmosphere as if madmen were in control.”

The musical aspects of the film stand out distinctly. As explained by Phillips, a significant portion of the music serves more as dialogue, with Arthur resorting to singing when he struggles to find the right words to convey his feelings. To make it clearer, he adds, “I don’t want people to misunderstand that it’s similar to ‘In the Heights,’ where the shopkeeper starts singing spontaneously and they move the performance out onto the street, even though I adore ‘In the Heights.'”

Beyond its musical elements, the sequel Joker: Folie à Deux delves into prison uprisings, courtroom tension, and a variety show segment where Phoenix and Gaga portray a lethal iteration of Sonny & Cher. This follow-up is anticipated to elevate the chaos and turmoil in the Joker’s realm to unprecedented levels.

In response to inquiries regarding a possible Joker 3, Phillips shared with Variety that crafting two films in this particular universe was an enjoyable experience, but he believes they’ve expressed everything they intended to convey. Furthermore, he dismissed speculations about the film’s budget surpassing $200 million as unfounded and absurd. Instead, he emphasized, it would be more appropriate to appreciate the budget for enabling them to hire a large crew, thereby providing employment opportunities that help sustain their families.

The movie “Folie à Deux” will make its debut at the Venice Film Festival in September, followed by a cinema release on October 4th.
