After hearing a final appeal for leniency from one of the key defendants, Aomar Aït Khedache (also known as “Old Omar”), the jury in Kim Kardashian’s Paris robbery case has stepped out to deliberate their decision, having retired on May 23.
In court, it was revealed that Aomar Aït Khedache had written on a note, “I’m struggling to express my remorse.” Due to his health issues leaving him partially deaf and nearly mute, he implored for forgiveness, stating, “I offer a thousand apologies.
Ait Khedache is among ten individuals, comprising nine males and one female, standing trial in Paris over their alleged involvement in a 2016 armed heist. They are being charged with armed robbery and kidnapping within an organized criminal group, according to the Daily Mail.
In October 2016, approximately USD 10 million worth of jewelry was taken from Kim Kardashian during a robbery. Among the stolen items was a USD 4 million engagement ring that her former husband, rapper Kanye West, had given her. Regrettably, this ring has yet to be found.
The event transpired within the confines of a private apartment located at the No Address Hotel in Paris. During the court proceedings, Kardashian provided her testimony via video link and expressed her deep-seated fear for her safety. When Judge David De Pas enquired if she believed she was about to lose her life, she responded emphatically, “Yes, I was absolutely convinced that I was on the verge of death.
The Prosecutor General, Anne-Dominique Merville, argued for a 10-year prison term for Aït Khedache, emphasizing that while he might be elderly and unlikely to reoffend, it’s crucial to ensure justice for his committed crimes. Moreover, she pointed out that Khedache was attempting to downplay the severity of the violence involved in the robbery, as his DNA was discovered at the crime scene.
In this case, a comparable 10-year prison term was proposed for Yunice Abbas, who is 72 years old and the sole defendant to admit guilt. During his imprisonment, Abbas penned a book titled “I Kidnapped Kim Kardashian,” which the prosecution utilized as evidence during the trial. In court, he expressed remorse for his actions and offered an apology.
Reports from DailyMail suggest that Didier Dubreucq, who is said to have accompanied Aït Khedache into Kardashian’s apartment, could also serve a 10-year prison term. In contrast, lighter sentences were proposed for the rest of the group, often referred to as the “Grandpa Robbers,” owing to their advanced age.
One of the defendants, Cathy Glotin (formerly known as Aït Khedache’s mistress), asserted her innocence, stating she had no part in this case. She expressed hope for being reconnected with her family soon. The prosecution alleges that she facilitated disposable phones and accompanied Aït Khedache to Antwerp to sell illicit jewelry.
