With Netflix no longer pursuing the acquisition, Paramount is now likely to buy Warner Bros. Discovery. This change could significantly impact James Gunn and his plans for the DC Universe.
Industry reports suggest the new leadership at Paramount is looking for broadly appealing, mainstream content and wants to avoid controversial, divisive topics. This creates a challenge for James Gunn, given his previous work.

Trump the wild card
Just as I said all along, President Trump was the wild card in all this.
Donald Trump recently criticized Netflix, urging the company to remove Susan Rice from its board following public disapproval of her statements.
Honestly, when you’ve already got regulators breathing down your neck and Washington watching everything you do, any extra pressure just makes things worse. It’s like, things are already tense, and any added heat just isn’t helpful.
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos reportedly went to Washington on Thursday hoping to revive the deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, but he didn’t meet with Donald Trump. Soon after, Netflix announced it was ending negotiations.

What about James Gunn?
If Paramount were to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery – with support from Donald Trump – they would then own DC Comics, including iconic characters like Superman, Batman, and the Justice League.
James Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe doesn’t seem to fit with the path Paramount is taking, which appears to be focusing on content geared towards American audiences and reflecting a ‘Make America Great Again’ ideology.
James Gunn has frequently disagreed with conservatives on social media, and his work for DC has explored progressive ideas that often spark debate and controversy.

The new owner is aiming for wider popularity across the country and doesn’t want Washington D.C. to be a source of constant conflict and criticism. The fans feel the same way.

Conservatives already got Gunn fired once
In 2018, James Gunn faced public scrutiny due to old online posts about politics and history. Conservative groups protested, ultimately leading to Disney firing him from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
Gunn often criticized Trump online, and his generally provocative style drew a lot of attention – and controversy.
If that happened at Disney, it can happen again at DC if Paramount wants fewer headaches.

Trump’s White House just claimed Superman
It’s worth noting that when James Gunn’s Superman movie came out, the White House shared a meme featuring Donald Trump as Superman, using the slogan “Truth, Justice and the American Way.”
That matters because Gunn’s Superman branding doesn’t match it.
Official merchandise for the movie changed the slogan to “Truth, Justice, and the Human Way.” Though the White House prefers using “American Way,” James Gunn’s new DC Universe is opting for this different phrase.

Will Gunn resign?
If Paramount finalizes control, Gunn has two paths.
He can either step down and present it as a personal decision, or remain in his position and allow the incoming leaders to determine if a change is necessary.
The second option usually ends messier.
