Will Grey’s Anatomy Return for Season 22? Medical Drama Shares Update Amid Ellen Pompeo’s Pay Gap Remarks

ABC has decided to continue airing its longest-running success, Grey’s Anatomy, for a 22nd season, keeping the medical series on the small screen. This renewal comes at a time when changes are happening in the show, notably after the main character of the show, Ellen Pompeo, announced in 2022 that she would be leaving her role as Meredith Grey.

After nearly two decades as the main character on the show, Pompeo changed her role to a recurring one in 2022, expressing that she wanted to pursue fresh opportunities. Pompeo shared her ambition to venture beyond the medical drama, likening it to an 18-year-old stepping out into adult life outside their family home.

In December 2022, Pompeo expressed on The Drew Barrymore Show that he felt it was time for a change, comparing his 19-year tenure to the length of time parents typically keep their children at home before sending them off to university when they turn 18. This, he suggested, was like him going away to college after so many years.

Initially, she left the series, but later returned to continue her character’s storyline in a recurring fashion. Moreover, she assured the loyal viewers that she would stick around, preventing the potential letdown of fans who have been following this show since its debut in 2005 with only nine initial episodes.

On The Jennifer Hudson Show, Pompeo expressed, “I believe the show will go on forever. I’m not sure, but I’ll always visit now and then. You see, it feels like home to me, and I don’t think Debbie Allen will ever let me go, as we share a close friendship.

In the 21st season, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Kevin McKidd, Kim Raver, Camilla Luddington, Adelaide Kane, Caterina Scorsone, Niko Terho, and others continue as main cast members. Contrarily, Trevor Jackson from Grown-ish will not be appearing in Season 22, according to Deadline’s reports.

On the talk show, Pompeo openly discussed her struggle for equal pay during her tenure as a regular cast member. Specifically, she shared her difficulties in receiving the same compensation as her male counterparts at first, despite being the main character of the series.

Although she acknowledged Patrick Dempsey’s contributions, she simultaneously voiced her discontent regarding the wage disparity. This apparently sparked resentment in Dempsey, as reported by Radar Online, saying, “It’s a real low blow, and he’s unsure of what he might have done to warrant such treatment.

In the heat of negotiations, I found myself advocating for Ellen Pompeo, encouraging her to firmly demand what was rightfully hers as a Grey’s Anatomy producer. Since then, she’s been using her platform to emphasize the importance of speaking up and fighting for equal pay opportunities in the workplace, inspiring many women, including me, to do the same.
