Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy, is not leaving the show permanently despite fewer appearances in recent episodes. The actress, aged 55, has been with the medical drama since its debut in 2005. Although her role was reduced during season 19, she explained to El País why she remains an integral part of the series.
Pompeo stated, ‘It’s illogical, neither emotionally nor financially. In the year 2024 alone, the show was watched over a billion times. Over a billion times.’ She further explained, ‘The corporations profiting from this series capitalize on our performances through our images, voices, and faces. If I were to leave entirely, they’d continue reaping profits from my efforts for two decades, while I’d receive none.’
Ellen Pompeo expressed that the series remains close to her heart, not just hers but also to the fans. She emphasized that the show carries immense emotional significance for many and she wishes to always express appreciation for it.
Despite Meredith Grey departing Seattle in the 19th season, Pompeo came back for the 20th season and will appear in at least seven episodes of the 21st. Her on-screen time was limited during this period as she focused on her Hulu project, Great American Family, but she has continued to maintain a strong connection with the enduring ABC drama.
2017 saw me making headlines as I secured a staggering USD 20 million deal, earning me the title of the highest-paid actress on television. In an interview with PEOPLE, I shared that this job was worth every moment, given the considerable time I had to spend away from my children. I felt it necessary for my continued presence in the show to bring about significant rewards, including breaking certain barriers.
In March, on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Pompeo revealed that prior to discussing her salary, she had a chat with Shonda Rhimes, the show creator. She expressed that she intended to ask for a particular amount and wanted to ensure Rhimes wouldn’t find it disrespectful. Pompeo emphasized the importance of Rhimes’ support and wanted to keep her updated on the actions she was taking.
In simpler terms, on one occasion, Pompeo described herself as the Disney princess from Grey’s Anatomy, implying the significant financial impact the series had made. She asserted that she had facts to back up her statements and firmly believed she was entitled to a portion of the program’s success.
