Will Daredevil Season 2 Reunite the Defenders for an Epic Showdown?

In the final episode of the first season of Daredevil: Born Again, Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) has gained more control over New York City, enforcing martial law and outlawing all vigilantes. As Daredevil (Charlie Cox) concludes episode 9, “Straight to Hell,” he realizes that defeating Fisk will require a strong force. It appears that this army will primarily consist of Matt Murdock’s former allies from The Defenders series, but we anticipate some new additions as well. As the impending war approaches, both Matt and Frank Castle may receive assistance from other heroes residing in New York City. We discuss the likelihood of each original Defender (and potential new Defenders) joining the battle in Daredevil: Born Again season 2.

Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter)

When the series Jessica Jones concluded, our lead character opted to remain in New York City, functioning as a super-powered private investigator. Although she doesn’t fit the traditional definition of a vigilante or wear a mask, we believe Mayor Fisk might not recognize such nuances. Considering her history as an ally of Matt Murdock during The Defenders, it’s plausible that she could be part of Daredevil: Born Again season 2. If any former Marvel Netflix character seems most likely to appear in the upcoming season, it’s Krysten Ritter portraying Jessica.

Luke Cage (Mike Colter)

Last time we saw Mike Colter’s character Luke Cage, he was the owner of Harlem’s Paradise nightclub. It’s uncertain how much vigilante work the bulletproof man has been doing lately. However, if his city declares martial law, it might prompt Luke Cage to resume his hero duties once more, even if he stopped years ago following the end of his show. In Marvel Comics, Luke Cage eventually became New York’s mayor after Wilson Fisk. It’s possible that the second season of Daredevil: Born Again could establish this scenario and bring back this Defender character.

Iron Fist/Danny Rand (Finn Jones)

Among the Defenders, Finn Jones as Danny Rand/Iron Fist is yearning to return more than anyone else. It’s fair to say that among the Netflix Marvel series, which ultimately led to The Defenders, Iron Fist was the least well-received. However, everyone deserves a second chance, so we won’t rule out Born Again giving martial artist superhero Danny Rand a fair shot at redemption. Perhaps since the conclusion of Iron Fist, Danny Rand has taken on the role of “Hero for Hire,” teaming up with Luke Cage? That wouldn’t be an undesirable development for his character.

Echo/Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox)

As a die-hard film fanatic, I can’t help but express my excitement about the potential return of Alaqua Cox as Echo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Given her connection with Wilson Fisk, it only seems fitting that she should reciprocate Daredevil’s cameo in her series. Out of all MCU characters, who has a more compelling reason to be entangled in a plot involving Fisk than Maya Lopez?

At this moment, it appears that the Echo series might not receive a second season. However, I believe we can use the “Born Again” storyline as a means of reintroducing Maya into the narrative and setting up another intense Maya/Fisk encounter. In my opinion, no character makes more sense to return for the Born Again season 2 than Echo herself.

Frank Castle/The Punisher (Jon Bernthal)

In the initial Defenders series, Jon Bernthal’s character, the Punisher (Frank Castle), didn’t fit the team dynamic and often clashed with Daredevil. However, his role in Born Again became indispensable, suggesting he won’t be absent from future battles. Despite uncertainties about how he’ll work with others, it seems crucial for him to be included in Matt’s growing army. Based on the first season, we anticipate that Frank will reappear next time around.

Moon Knight (Oscar Isaac)

Since the conclusion of “Moon Knight,” we haven’t had any official updates about Oscar Isaac reprising his role as Marc Spector/Steven Knight/Jake Lockley. Given Isaac’s packed movie schedule, it might be challenging to get him back for another series. Among the newer Marvel Disney+ characters, only Echo seems to fit less seamlessly into Matt Murdock’s world compared to Moon Knight. It would be exciting to see the Mister Knight persona team up with Matt to take down bad guys using their signature billy clubs.

Spider-Man/Peter Parker (Tom Holland)

Among all Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, none seem more fitting to be influenced by the events of “Born Again” than Spider-Man. Peter Parker was briefly referenced by Mayor Fisk in episode two of the series, and we know he’s out there, battling crime while wearing a mask. Regrettably, it’s highly improbable that Spiderman will make an appearance, as Marvel Studios can only utilize the character in half-hour animated TV shows. Even if they could use Spider-Man, it seems unlikely that Tom Holland would return for a TV series. However, he really ought to be involved, or at least mentioned.

In the Netflix series “The Defenders,” the characters didn’t quite shine as we hoped they would. Therefore, we’re eagerly anticipating that the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again” will provide an opportunity for their reunion, offering a more compelling narrative. It would be fantastic to witness them joining forces once more to retake New York from Fisk and potentially welcoming new allies in their quest.
