In a highly anticipated return, Cameron Diaz graced the big screens anew with action-comedy “Back in Action,” co-starring Jamie Foxx. The story revolves around Emily, played by Diaz, and Matt, portrayed by Foxx – a married pair who used to be CIA spies. When their undercover identity is compromised, they are compelled to re-enter their former lives.
Warning: Spoilers for Back in Action!
Following their confrontation with former ally Chuck (Kyle Chandler) in the movie, the spy duo drops by their old acquaintance Baron (Andrew Scott). He presents them with a fresh mystery to solve that has connections to Emily’s genealogy. This time around, it’s a case that delves into her family history.
Emily firmly states, “I won’t be returning to work, Baron.” But Baron insists that the situation is “grave” and necessitates Emily and one of her family members to collaborate and address it. It seems her mother, Ginny, a seasoned MI6 agent (portrayed by Glenn Close), might be involved in this case.
In response, Baron says, “That’s not your mom, it’s your dad.” The movie ends with this intriguing hint, sparking curiosity among viewers about Emily’s father. When asked about the ending and possible sequel, director Seth Gordon playfully hinted at the future of the franchise.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gordon shared that creative discussions about potential father candidates and their possible storylines have taken place. However, a sequel has not been formally acknowledged at this point. If there’s enough public interest, though, the possibility could arise.
Instead, the director hinted that a possible follow-up might focus primarily on Matt and Emily’s kids – their rebellious teenage daughter Alice and resourceful son Leo – as the main protagonists. Gordon suggested that there could be engaging tales derived from these children’s personal experiences.
By further developing the narrative threads of these youthful personalities, as well as delving into the backgrounds of Emily’s father and Ginny’s enigmatic ex-husband, our team has generated some intriguing concepts to work with. To put it simply, we have a lot of exciting ideas now, as Gordon confirmed.
Back in Action is streaming now on Netflix.
