As a long-time Marvel fan and follower of Sebastian Stan’s career, I must admit that his recent comments about potentially taking up the Captain America shield have me both excited and skeptical. On one hand, seeing Bucky Barnes step into those iconic boots would be an incredible journey for a character we’ve watched grow over the years. On the other hand, I can’t help but wonder if Marvel might be trying to milk the franchise a bit too much by passing the shield around so often.
However, let’s not forget that Sebastian Stan had his breakout year in 2024, delivering outstanding performances in The Apprentice and A Different Man. If anyone can make us believe that Bucky is worthy of the shield, it’s him. Plus, the prospect of sharing the screen with Dune star Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Wyatt Russel in Thunderbolts* makes this fan’s heart race!
Now, if only Marvel would let Bucky have a dance-off with Spider-Man, I might just lose it. (I mean, who could forget the epic dance-off between Chris Evans and Tom Holland? A Bucky-Peter Parker showdown would be too hilarious to resist!)
Sebastian Stan has added fuel to Marvel Cinematic Universe speculation, suggesting a potential future appearance where he could wield the revered Captain America shield. Initially portraying James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes opposite Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers in the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger.
As a passionate follower, I recently learned from Comic Book Movie that at Tokyo Comic-Con, it was Stan who playfully hoisted Cap’s shield and declared, “Not Captain America…yet.” This intriguing statement ignited the imaginations of fans, hinting towards a potential future where, following Sam Wilson’s tenure as Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World, Bucky Barnes might step up to become the new Captain America.
In the comics, after Steve Rogers’ demise, Bucky temporarily assumed the role of Captain America for a while. Later on, Sam Wilson took over the shield in another narrative thread. The series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” didn’t delve into Bucky’s tenure as Captain America, but Stan’s suggestive remark has sparked excitement among fans about the possibility of Bucky donning the Captain America suit again, potentially in films like Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.
In conversation about his role as Bucky, Stan expressed that it was rewarding to witness the character develop through him – much like how Bucky has evolved over time. He is thrilled about Bucky’s progression and believes that the audience will truly appreciate it.
According to a recent interview, Stan shared that he finds it enjoyable to revisit his character after so many years have passed, since both he and the character evolve personally over time.
He commented, “I wouldn’t have guessed we’d reach this point with him, but it’s an intriguing collection of personalities. Each one seems to draw out unique aspects of the others.
2024 marked a significant leap for actor Sebastian Stan, with impressive roles in The Apprentice and A Different Man. With his burgeoning talent, more chances may open up within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Stan is set to feature in the upcoming MCU collaboration film, Thunderbolts, scheduled for release on May 5, 2025. This star-studded production also includes Florence Pugh from Dune, David Harbour, and Wyatt Russel.
