Wicked Part 2: What To Expect From The 2025 Release Of Jon M Chu’s Highly Anticipated Film

As a dedicated fan who has grown up with the tales of Oz, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming release of Wicked: Part Two! Having witnessed the incredible success of the first film and the magic it brought to life on screen, I am eagerly awaiting the continuation of this enchanting story.

Fans eagerly anticipating more adventures in Oz from Wicked won’t have to wait too long! The second installment of the film adaptation, helmed by Jon M. Chu, is set to premiere in cinemas on November 21, 2025 – just about a year after the debut of the initial part of this two-part adaptation based on the cherished Broadway musical.

In the second installment of “Wicked,” we’ll delve deeper into the tales of the witches from Oz. Ariana Grande will portray Glinda the Good Witch, while Cynthia Erivo takes on the role of Elphaba, the infamous Wicked Witch of the West. The initial movie, premiering on November 22, 2024, was a blockbuster hit, raking in $114 million during its debut weekend – a record for musical adaptations.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’d like to share an intriguing fact: The movie you’re about to watch is a reimagining of a 2003 Broadway musical, which in turn was born from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” This musical production and subsequent film have ventured into unexplored territories by presenting an alternate narrative. Instead of retelling the story from The Wizard of Oz as we know it, they delve deep into the lesser-known histories of these magical characters, offering a fresh perspective from their viewpoints.

Winnie Holzman, responsible for the play’s book, crafted the film’s screenplay, with additional contributions from Dana Fox in the scriptwriting process. Notably, Academy Award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz tailored the musical for the screen, transforming the stage tunes into cinematic melodies on the big screen.

In contrast to the initial Wicked film that closely followed the stage performance, Wicked: Part Two might introduce some variations. Jeff Goldblum, portraying the Wizard in the movie, hinted during an interview that the second installment will incorporate a couple of fresh tunes penned by Schwartz, enriching the narrative further. As for the storyline, it’s mostly kept secret, but director Jon M. Chu has assured us that the sequel won’t deviate too much from the original production.

Chu elaborated on why the story was divided into two movies. He believed that dividing it would create a more emotionally satisfying viewing experience. In his words, “If we want the climax to be ‘Defying Gravity,’ we need to develop Elphaba more than the stage production possibly does.

According to the director, there’s ample room within films to examine and further develop the connection between Elphaba and Glinda, as well as to uncover more about their respective backstories.
