WICKED: PART 2 Is Now Titled WICKED: FOR GOOD

As a lifelong musical theater enthusiast who has been enchanted by the tale of Elphaba and Glinda since its debut on Broadway, I am thrilled about the title change for “Wicked: Part 2” to “Wicked: For Good.” This decision not only resonates with the heart of the story but also cleverly ties in one of the most poignant songs from the show.

The sequel to “Wicked,” originally titled “Wicked: Part 2,” has been given a new name – “Wicked: For Good” – a year before its scheduled release. According to “The Hollywood Reporter,” the change in title is likely due to the significance of the song “For Good” from the original Broadway musical. In the play, this second-to-last song, sung as a duet by Elphaba and Glinda, symbolizes the essence of the storyline, with the two characters expressing that they have shaped each other’s lives. The lyrics convey Elphaba’s sentiment that even if their stories take different paths, she knows that Glinda has impacted her life by becoming her friend.

It’s understandable that renaming the second chapter of Wicked could be beneficial, particularly from a marketing perspective. Many fans of the Broadway production concur that the show’s most popular numbers are primarily found in Act One. Therefore, it was an obvious choice (not to imply any lack of intelligence) to market the first act of Wicked around “Defying Gravity” and “Popular.” These songs resonate with people who have not even seen the play. While Act Two of Wicked contains beautiful songs as well, none are as memorable as the ones previously mentioned, except for perhaps “For Good.” Composer Stephen Schwartz truly excelled with this piece, and when Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande perform it together, there won’t be a dry eye in the audience.

At present, “Wicked” stands as the top-earning domestic film adapted from a Broadway musical. However, when adjusted for inflation in ticket prices, the titles “Grease” and “The Sound of Music” would still hold that distinction. Yet, even with these factors considered, “Wicked” wouldn’t trail too far behind. This cultural juggernaut has made the sequel to the “Wizard of Oz” prequel, titled “Wicked: For Good“, one of the most eagerly awaited films of 2025. The movie is set to premiere in cinemas nationwide on November 21, 2025.
