‘Wicked’ Just Surpassed ‘E.T.’ to Become One of Universal’s Most Successful Movies of All Time

I’ve been thoroughly captivated by “Wicked” since its theater release over two months ago, and it seems I’m not alone! Even with the movie now offered for digital purchase, this magical tale still packs a punch at the box office, demonstrating an enduring allure that keeps audiences coming back.

Over the past weekend, the musical “Wicked” earned another impressive $5 million, bringing its total domestic gross to a staggering $459 million. Worldwide, the movie has amassed an astounding $697 million, with $238 million coming from overseas markets.

In simple terms, the earnings of “Wicked” have pushed it into the top three highest-earning films for Universal Pictures, surpassing the $439 million earned by “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial”. Yet, it has not yet outperformed “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” which made $574 million and “Jurassic World” with its astounding $653 million.

Currently, “Wicked” is nearly reaching the top 25 of the highest-earning films in the U.S. domestic box office, with a mere $18 million separating it from “Frozen 2,” which is currently ranked at #27.

The movie currently ranks as the second highest-grossing film adapted from a Broadway play, surpassed only by Frozen 2 and Beauty and the Beast in musical earnings. In the fantasy genre, it takes the second position, following closely behind Beauty and the Beast, and is also listed among the top ten PG-rated films overall.

Despite seeing a decrease from initially performing in 3,800 theaters to currently gracing approximately 2,900 screens, I’m still impressed that Wicked continues to rank among the top box office contenders.

The movie “Wicked” seems unlikely to be withdrawn from cinemas at this point, as it has already earned $70 million in its first week on digital platforms. Consequently, it’s not anticipated to appear on streaming services for a while yet.
