WICKED: FOR GOOD’S New Original Songs Share First Previews

Everyone is eagerly awaiting the release of Wicked: For Good, and it might just be one of the biggest movie events of the year! The first Wicked film only covered the first half of the Broadway musical, ending with Elphaba’s powerful performance of “Defying Gravity.” Now, the new film adapts the second half of the story. However, the second act has fewer songs than the first (eight compared to eleven), so the filmmakers have added two brand new songs written by the original composer, Stephen Schwartz. Universal has given fans a sneak peek of both of these new additions.

The first sneak peek of a new song from Wicked: For Good is a solo performance by Elphaba, titled “No Place Like Home.” It’s a clear nod to Judy Garland and the iconic 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. You can listen to a short preview of the song below.

The second original song from Wicked features Ariana Grande as Glinda. Titled “The Girl in the Bubble,” it’s a lovely song that reveals how Glinda, often seen as the “Good Witch,” actually governs a kingdom founded on deception. You can hear a preview of the song here:

Even though Wicked tells the story before L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, it includes many nods to the famous 1939 MGM movie. Things like Elphaba’s green skin, Glinda’s bubble, and the line “There’s no place like home” all come from the film. However, the creators couldn’t use the ruby slippers – those were invented for the movie and are still trademarked by Warner Bros. Instead, they opted for silver shoes, as described in the original book.

To promote the new movie Wicked: For Good, NBC broadcast a concert called Wicked: One Wonderful Night. The highlight was Cynthia Erivo’s incredible performance of “Defying Gravity” – she actually appeared to float above the crowd while singing! The song is famously powerful, and even though it’s performed often, it still manages to be incredibly moving.

The movie Wicked: For Good arrives in theaters on November 21st! We’re excited to hear the new original songs and hope they’re as fantastic as the beloved classics.
