The new movie, Wicked: For Good, has opened in theaters to great success, earning more at the box office during its opening weekend than the first Wicked movie did last year.
Universal reports that the new movie earned $150 million in the U.S. and $226 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This is a stronger start than another 2024 film, which made $112.5 million domestically and $164 million globally during its first weekend.
I’m absolutely thrilled to say that Wicked: For Good has made history! It’s officially broken records, becoming the highest-grossing movie musical opening ever, both here domestically and worldwide. It’s incredible to see this beloved Broadway show reach such amazing heights on the big screen!
The film had the second-highest opening weekend of any movie released in 2025 up to that point, trailing only A Minecraft Movie but performing better than Lilo & Stitch. For the studio, it marked the second-largest domestic opening ever, surpassed only by the 2015 release of Jurassic World.
This movie is the second of two films based on the popular stage musical. Directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, it continues the story of Elphaba and Glinda, showing how they become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. The original cast, including Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Marissa Bode, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum, all reprise their roles in this second installment.
The movie earned $68.6 million on its opening day in theaters, and an additional $30.8 million from showings earlier in the week. These early screenings were the most successful of the year, exceeding the preview totals for both The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Superman.
The final #WickedForGood trailer is here ✨ Watch now.

The second movie in the series received a mixed reaction from critics, differing from the response to the first film. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 71% positive rating, with reviewers noting that while the film’s slower speed and more serious mood aren’t always effective, the ending is satisfying. They described it as a strong conclusion to the story of Elphaba and Glinda, despite some pacing issues.
Critics at Metacritic gave the film a mixed review, with a score of 58. However, audiences really enjoyed it! CinemaScore gave it an ‘A’ grade, and a PostTrak survey showed that 92% of viewers liked the movie, with 82% saying they’d recommend it to others.
