‘Wicked: For Good’ Scores Big with Audiences Despite Mixed Reviews

The movie Wicked: For Good, sometimes referred to as Wicked: Part Two, is now playing in theaters. While critics have given it mixed reviews, audiences seem to be loving it.

The film, directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, picks up the story of Elphaba and Glinda in Oz. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo reprise their roles as the main characters, and the cast also includes Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.

The movie Wicked: For Good is based on the second half of the popular stage musical from 2003, which was originally inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel. That novel offers a fresh take on the classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. The film tells the story of how Elphaba and Glinda become the characters known as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, showing what happened before and during the events of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.

The film first premiered in São Paulo, Brazil on November 4th, and then opened in the United States on November 21st. It has since earned $36 million globally. Viewers have generally loved the movie, giving it an ‘A’ rating from CinemaScore and a 92% positive impression rate according to PostTrak, with 82% saying they’d recommend it.

While some loved the movie, critics had a more mixed reaction. Rotten Tomatoes reports that 70% of 225 reviews were positive, though the site notes the film’s slower pace and darker themes occasionally hinder the story. Metacritic gave it a score of 58 out of 100, indicating generally average or mixed reviews.

While the two-part movie adaptation of Wicked proved profitable, some reviewers felt it didn’t work artistically. One critic described Wicked: Part One as surprisingly bad, citing poor pacing and visual issues. They also criticized the decision to feature Ariana Grande more prominently than Cynthia Erivo, comparing it to swapping a refreshing drink for something bland and uninspired.
