‘Wicked: For Good’ Ending, According to the Director, Explained

The musical Wicked: For Good ends with a powerful finale intended to make audiences question their understanding of who we are, the decisions we make, and the real meaning of goodness, according to director Jon M. Chu.

According to director Chu, the film’s ending forces each main character to choose which reality they want to live in.

He explained his belief that everyone has both good and bad qualities. We all face daily choices that determine which side of ourselves we express.

The movie concludes by revealing the fate of Elphaba and Glinda after everyone in Oz believes Elphaba, the Wicked Witch, has died in a staged event.

After being betrayed, Elphaba finds Fiyero again—he was miraculously transformed into a Scarecrow when she saved his life. Believed to be dead by everyone else, they escape Oz and journey to a remote desert beyond its borders.

Chu explained that while the team initially thought of showing the wasteland as scary, he ultimately envisioned it as something else. He saw the desert not as a place of fear, but as an empty canvas brimming with possibility.

It was heartbreaking to see Glinda return to the Emerald City after everything that happened with Elphaba. She revealed a shocking secret – the Wizard and Elphaba were actually related! This caused him to give up his position and leave Oz for good. Then, Glinda focused on Madame Morrible, making sure she was imprisoned and, powerfully, using Morrible’s own harsh words against her. It felt like justice, but it was still a sad time for everyone.

Glinda then takes on the responsibility of rebuilding Oz. She works to reintegrate Animals into society and strives to be a more effective and compassionate leader than her predecessors.

Glinda returns the Grimmerie to the tower where Elphaba originally learned magic. As she sings “For Good,” the book magically reacts to her. Meanwhile, miles away, Elphaba looks back at Oz, joining in the song as she travels through the desert with Fiyero.

Chu points out that the movie doesn’t fully resolve a key mystery: did Glinda gain Elphaba’s magical abilities, or did she discover her own hidden power? He explains that by giving Glinda the book, Elphaba was essentially saying, ‘You understand the power you hold and the truth behind it.’ However, the film leaves it open whether Glinda will choose to use this power, and for what purpose.

The film ends with Glinda illuminated by the magical Grimmerie, as Elphaba and Fiyero embark on a new life, finally free from the constraints of their past.

The epic conclusion comes to theaters this November. Watch the #WickedForGood trailer now 🧹🫧
