‘Wicked: For Good’ Breaks 2025 Records with $68.6M Opening Day Domestically

The new movie ‘Wicked: For Good’ is a huge success at the box office. It earned an impressive $68.6 million in the U.S. on its opening day, making it the biggest film debut of the year so far.

The movie is expected to make $228 million worldwide by Sunday, making it one of the biggest opening weekends ever for a musical, according to Deadline.

The cast of the sequel includes returning stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. The story is set in Oz and explores what happened before and during the events of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, diving deeper into the characters and how they change.

The movie adaptation was first announced by Universal Pictures and Marc Platt back in 2012. After a long development process and setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, director Chu joined the project, and Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were cast in 2021. Filmmakers decided to split the story into two movies to fully develop the plot and characters. Filming started in England in December 2022, was temporarily halted by the 2023 actors’ strike, and finished in January 2024.

The movie first premiered in São Paulo, Brazil on November 4th, and then opened in the United States on November 21st. It’s doing exceptionally well around the world, earning an estimated $76 million in 78 countries. This is 15% higher than the international opening weekend for the first film.

Experts are reporting that Wicked: For Good has broken records, achieving the largest global opening for any Broadway show adapted into a movie and becoming one of the biggest Hollywood debuts of 2025—the fourth largest, to be exact.

Although the film isn’t as well-known internationally as it is at home, it’s still received a lot of positive attention and acclaim around the world.
