In their New Mexico residence, Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and their pet dog were tragically discovered deceased. As investigations continue, authorities have unveiled recently obtained bodycam footage that indicates the couple, who had been married for almost three decades, slept in different bedrooms before they both passed away.
The cause appears to be linked to the actor’s dogs, as they seemed to dislike the Oscar winner.
In a tragic turn of events, the bodies of Hackman and his esteemed classical piano-playing spouse were discovered in separate parts of their home. The grim discovery was initially made by the sheriff of Santa Fe.
According to the body camera video evidence, Joey Padilla arrived at the actor’s residence to care for two of the three surviving dogs. Later, during her conversation with detectives following the tragic event, Padilla disclosed that Arakawa was primarily responsible for the pets and showed a nurturing attitude towards them. On the other hand, Hackman didn’t seem to be as involved in caring for the dogs.
Padilla is reported to have told officials, “It was Betsy who handled all the dogs, while Gene had no involvement with them. That’s why they were kept apart, sleeping in different areas of the house.” The pet shop owner added, “The dogs were quite aggressive towards Gene.
Furthermore, the dogs guided the officials towards the deceased individuals, which prompted them to recognize that something was amiss. As reported by Santa Fe Chief Brian Moya, he shared with media outlets that “it seemed as though (the dog) was attempting to communicate, ‘Over here! Over here.’
Among the deceased pets, one dog, believed to have been without food for an extended period, was discovered near the remains of its owners, which were found to be preserved like mummies, next to Arakawa.
Gene Hackman was 95 at the time of his death, while Betsy Arakawa was 64.
