Marlon Brando won an Oscar for his role in On The Waterfront, yet surprisingly, he left the Italian premiere halfway through because he disliked it. A book detailing the 1950s Italian film scene, penned by an American couple residing in Rome during that period, shed light on the infamous “angry young man” of Hollywood.
As per the book’s account, the actor was taken aback when he discovered that an Italian actor had dubbed his lines for the local adaptation. Upon hearing this, his agent recollected Brando appearing stunned, almost like he’d suffered a heart attack, and urged him to leave the theater. “I’m an actor, not a puppet controlled by a ventriloquist… I feel like a carnival oddity. Why wasn’t I informed earlier?”, Brando reportedly exclaimed.
As stated in the book, the actor, who had visited a local bar, was repeatedly requested to reappear on stage for the movie’s dramatic conclusion. He made his way back near the end of the movie and accepted the appreciation and applause that followed.
As reported by The Guardian, Hank Kaufman and Gene Lerner relocated to the city in 1953 and developed friendships with many stars. Although they both passed away – in 2004 for Gene and 2012 for Hank – their significant yet unrecognized contributions to the entertainment industry are now being acknowledged.

Paul Cronin will release this much-anticipated translation through Sticking Place Books. In an interview with The Guardian, the publishing company hinted that the translated memoir combines elements of “La Dolce Vita” and “Call My Agent.
