66-year-old musician, author, and activist Jill Sobule tragically lost her life in a residential fire. Sadly, this unfortunate event led to the cancellation of her last planned concert.
Originally planned for Thursday evening at Denver’s Swallow Hill Music was Sobule’s final concert. Due to the sad demise of the I Kissed a Girl singer, however, the venue will now host a free tribute event instead, running from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m., as stated on her official website.
On Jill’s official website, it says: “Jill was deeply cherished by the Swallow Hill community and we know her absence will be felt greatly. The concert that was scheduled for tonight has been replaced with a free, casual gathering in Jill’s memory at Swallow Hill, from 7:30 – 9:00 PM. Everyone is invited to join us.
105.5 The Colorado Sound’s Ron Bostwick, a key figure in organizing Sobule’s Colorado tours, will be the host for this event. Everyone, whether friends or fans, is invited to participate and reminisce about her life and career.
Back in the day, I was utterly captivated by Sobule’s unique songwriting – raw, honest, and trailblazing. Her single I Kissed a Girl etched its way into music history back in 1995, becoming the first openly gay-themed tune to crack the Billboard Top 20 charts, as her website proudly declares. Over the years, she’s dropped more than a dozen albums, and her tunes have tackled themes ranging from LGBTQ+ issues and mental health to politics and social injustice. To top it all off, Supermodel, her alt-rock gem, turned into a generational anthem when it was featured in the timeless classic Clueless.
The representatives – her agent, manager, and lawyer who have been with her for a long time – shared profound sadness, reminiscing about her not only as a client but also as a cherished friend and creative partner. They spoke fondly of her kindness, her wit, and her relentless dedication to her work.
Originally from Denver, Sobule always maintained strong ties with the local music community that she came from. Furthermore, she was a vocal advocate for innovative business strategies for independent musicians. She leaves behind her brother and his family.
Fans of Jill Sobule are planning to come together for a celebration honoring her unique voice, her music, and the enduring influence she had, before an official memorial service that will take place at a future time.
