Why Tom Hanks Feels The Superhero Genre Is Failing? Actor Says THIS

As a die-hard fan who has grown up with the magic of Tom Hanks‘ performances, I find myself deeply intrigued by his insights into the current state of superhero films. Having witnessed his transformation from Forrest Gump to Captain John Miller, I can attest to his ability to breathe life into characters and make us believe in their stories.

Lately, superhero movies have experienced a decline, and Tom Hanks has expressed some firm views on the reasons behind this genre’s struggle. In his perspective, the allure of the superhero genre seems to be diminishing. During his interview on the Happy, Sad, Confused Podcast, Hanks reminisced about the attempts in the ’70s and ’80s to create TV adaptations of Captain America, Spider-Man, and even Batman, but the technology available at that time was not advanced enough.

As I stand here, I can confidently affirm that yes, indeed, anything is achievable. You may recall the groundbreaking film, Superman, portrayed by Christopher Reeve – a cinematic masterpiece that almost reached the pinnacle of contemporary technology. It was the moment when we all believed, with unwavering conviction, ‘You will believe a man can fly.’ Truly, it was a marvel to witness this extraordinary spectacle unfold before our very eyes.

“I think we are now enjoying the luxury of riches because you can make anything happen on screen,” Hanks continued. When asked why those movies that people once fascinated over are not working anymore, the actor explained that the audience is now seeking depth in the content they consume.

He elaborated, “We’re returning to the idea: ‘Alright, that’s factual, but what’s the narrative? What story is it telling about us?’ This is a thoughtful challenge for any filmmaker. It might not necessarily resonate within the industry as a knockout punch.

Hanks commented that filmmaking these days is an uncertain journey compared to before, where people would confidently say “This works and it will work again.” Now, when a movie or series is released, instead of certainty, there are many questions like “What’s the purpose of this production?” according to Hanks.

He thinks that consumers prefer to explore fresh content rather than sticking with traditional material, since there is an abundance of alternatives to choose from. In his own words, “It’s not just about flashy content… it’s about the narrative. It’s about understanding who I am and what resonates with me. We’re venturing into uncharted territories.

If asked about joining a superhero franchise like Marvel or DC, the Oscar winner expressed his willingness but also shared that he has numerous ideas he wants to bring to life in the future. He explained, “I don’t object to it, I suppose, yet…but at the same time…there’s a lot I’m envisioning and working towards.
