Last week, the shares of The Metals Company (TMC) significantly increased. The stock price for this seabed mining expert went up by 16.3%. In comparison, the S&P 500 index only increased by 0.6% during the same period.
Although the company didn’t announce any significant updates last week, TMC’s stock remained robustly optimistic due to speculations about an upcoming major regulatory approval. Over the last quarter, its share price has surged by a staggering 158%, and it has seen a monumental increase of 582% this year alone.
Investors stay bullish on TMC’s seabed mining bet
Given the strained ties between the U.S. and China, securing access to scarce earth minerals has emerged as a critical strategic focus for the Trump administration. This situation has contributed significantly to the soaring success of TMC’s stock, with its share price posting another week of substantial gains this week, even without any new positive market developments.
In April, President Trump issued an executive order aimed at speeding up the evaluation of mining permit requests. Right away, TMC filed their initial application for seabed mining authorization, leading many investors to speculate that the company might soon receive approval to initiate operations.
Could recent Nvidia news derail TMC’s rally?
Observing the situation, it appears that Nvidia, known for its leadership in AI hardware, could be experiencing a potentially bullish shift following a meeting between its CEO Jensen Huang and President Trump. The intriguing part is that Nvidia has recently stated it’s on track to receive export licenses, which would allow the sale of its H20 processors in China. Earlier this year, these sales were effectively banned by the administration, but now it seems like these export licenses are being granted as part of ongoing trade negotiations. This development could signal a significant turnaround for the mining specialist in the Chinese market.
The change in U.S. export license policy is linked to talks aimed at gaining access to Chinese rare earth minerals. A potential agreement on these minerals might significantly impact TMC shares, but it’s also plausible that the U.S. will continue striving to strengthen its own domestic mineral extraction abilities.
