As a die-hard fan of the “Only Murders in the Building” series, I must say that the anticipation for Season 4 has been palpable! With Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin gracing our screens yet again, it’s safe to say that this is going to be a rollercoaster of emotions.
Today, August 27th, the fourth season of “Only Murders in the Building,” featuring Selena Gomez, Martin Short, Steve Martin along with others, debuted on Hulu. Although it’s only just begun, critics are already praising it, and the cast has hinted that this season will be the darkest one they’ve tackled so far.
In a recent chat with GamesRadar+, Gomez revealed that the cast feels this season is the most ominous yet, as characters, particularly Charles, encounter more danger than in past seasons. According to Gomez, “This is as close as we get… we definitely ponder whether Charles is the main focus, which is a significant plot point.”
In the same vein, Martin, who portrays Charles in the show, stated, “It’s truly disheartening that one of my dearest friends in ‘Only Murders’ has been murdered, and the fact that the killer is still at large adds a somber tone to this season.” Discussing his role and acting, Martin shared, “I can hardly believe it, but I’ve spent my entire life acting, and I’ve often encountered situations like this in films where I need to delve deeper. It’s all about presenting the performance effectively.”
Apart from reminiscing about his role in the 1991 romantic comedy, he mentioned the unique challenge of switching between intense emotional scenes and comical ones, like going from expressing deep feelings one moment to landing in a bush the next. He described it as something you learn over time, a delicate balance. In his words, “It’s tricky. It’s a humorous production, but your friend dies, so there was a careful balance required in my performance to get it right. And I believe I managed it successfully!” He then laughed a little.
In Season 4, Charles (Martin), Mabel (Gomez), and Oliver (Short) reappear for another murder case. This time, it’s Charles’ longtime stunt double, Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), who is found dead, making the crime particularly emotional for him. The trio must unravel the mystery surrounding this surprising event. Unlike previous seasons, the investigation shifts from their typical New York neighborhood to California. An intriguing turn occurs as they delve into an unfamiliar territory due to the change in location.
In the current season, not only do the trio delve into solving crimes, but they also find themselves at the center of a high-budget film about their lives. This adds an interesting layer to the plot as they juggle their work with Hollywood’s demands. The upcoming challenges, like negotiating the movie deal while continuing to investigate a murder, are hinted at in the trailer, giving the season a fresh dimension.
This season sees the return of Meryl Streep, while some fresh additions to the cast for season 4 are Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, Kumail Nanjiani, Melissa McCarthy, and Eva Longoria.
