Why Quentin Tarantino Walked Away From His Acting Dreams

Before becoming the famous director we know today, Quentin Tarantino had some interesting early jobs. He worked as an usher at an adult movie theater and learned a lot about films while working at a California video store.

He initially focused on acting, even taking classes, but he discovered his passion for screenwriting through working with other actors.

During an acting class, Quentin Tarantino worked on a scene from the classic 1955 film Marty, written by Paddy Chayefsky. He later told NPR that this assignment was the first time he considered writing as a serious pursuit.

While adapting Chayefsky’s script to fit his own style, Tarantino unexpectedly discovered a talent for writing. His acting teacher famously told him, “Quentin, you rewrote Paddy Chayefsky!”

Tarantino was surprised until his teacher explained that he had added a monologue about a fountain that wasn’t in the original. Though he apologized, his teacher encouraged him, saying it was the best part of the scene. It was the first time anyone had recognized and praised a skill he hadn’t yet considered a strength.

Tarantino eventually decided he wanted to direct films for two main reasons. He’d always admired directors and felt more passionate about movies themselves than his classmates, who were mostly focused on their own careers. Plus, he loved movies so much he didn’t just want to be in them – he wanted to create his own vision and make his films.

I’ve always been struck by how much Tarantino’s films hinge on his incredible scripts – it really defines his style. From the very beginning, with Reservoir Dogs back in ’92, it was clear he uses these long, winding conversations to explore how we experience the world today. He’s done some acting over the years, popping up in his own movies, but I think he made the right choice focusing on writing. Though, it’s exciting to see him step back in front of the camera in a big way! He just finished filming Only What We Carry, a French drama where he plays a character named John Percy. It’s been thirty years since he had a role like this! The movie also stars some amazing actors like Simon Pegg, Sofia Boutella, and Charlotte Gainsbourg, and it’s about someone going back home to deal with some painful memories. I can’t wait to see it!

Quentin Tarantino is involved in a new, large-scale Netflix film called The Adventures of Cliff Booth, planned for release this summer. While David Fincher directed it, Tarantino wrote and produced the movie, which continues the story from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with a $200 million budget. Brad Pitt returns as Cliff Booth, alongside Elizabeth Debicki and Scott Caan.

Regarding his next directorial project, Tarantino canceled his planned film, The Movie Critic, earlier this year. He’s now working on a stage play, and if it’s well-received, he hopes to adapt it into what he intends to be his final movie.
