Why Quentin Tarantino Refuses To Make a Superhero Movie

Quentin Tarantino is famous for his attention to detail and his clear love of classic movies. You can always recognize his unique style, whether he’s making a gritty crime film like Reservoir Dogs or a nostalgic tribute to 1960s Los Angeles, as in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

He’s experimented with lots of genres – from Westerns to martial arts – but there’s one type of movie he consistently avoids: superhero films.

In his book, Cinema Speculation, the director expressed his eagerness for a shift away from superhero movies dominating theaters. He shares Martin Scorsese’s view that these big-budget films feel more like theme park attractions than genuine cinema. Scorsese believes that true movies should center on people connecting through shared emotions and inner lives, instead of simply relying on large-scale spectacle.

I’ve seen a lot of debate about superhero films, but you can’t deny they’re huge right now – Avengers: Endgame made a crazy amount of money, for example. I remember reading an interview with Quentin Tarantino from 2022 where he was talking to Howard Stern, and he actually said that if movies like that had been this popular when he was a kid and into comics, he’d probably be right there with everyone else. But he also explained that he doesn’t really enjoy them as they are now. He feels they rely too heavily on CGI and effects that are added in post-production, and that’s just not his thing.

Quentin Tarantino strongly believes that effects are best when created practically during filming, rather than added digitally later. He prefers using traditional techniques like makeup and animatronics with his team and actors to build everything on set. He’s proud to have what he considers the best effects crew in the industry, allowing him to capture action directly on film.

Recently, Tarantino was a writer on The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Though he wrote the script, he opted not to direct it. The film, starring Brad Pitt and Elizabeth Debicki, finished filming in January with David Fincher as director.

The director has recently been in the news for being very direct – and sometimes critical – when talking about other actors. For example, in January, he caused a lot of online discussion when he described Paul Dano as “weak and uninteresting” during a podcast. This led actors like George Clooney and Toni Collette to publicly support Dano.

While he’s waiting for his son to be old enough to visit a movie set, Tarantino continues to run his New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles and work on his writing.
