Why Kirsten Dunst’s Judy Might Never Return to the Jumanji Franchise; Explained

As a die-hard fan who has grown up with the magical world of Jumanji, I find myself deeply invested in the evolution of this timeless classic. The news about Kirsten Dunst’s absence from the sequels has always left me yearning for more of Judy Shepherd’s enchanting presence.

Director Jake Kasdan recently discussed why Kirsten Dunst, who played Judy Shepherd in the original 1995 film “Jumanji,” hasn’t appeared in the sequels released since 2017. In a recent interview, Kasdan explained that it was difficult to include her character in the updated films.

Kasdan praised Dunst for her outstanding performance, but noted that the original film’s ending poses challenges for furthering Judy’s narrative. In the 1995 movie, Judy and her brother Peter (played by Bradley Pierce) lose all memory of their Jumanji adventures once the magical game resets time. Only Alan (Robin Williams) and Sarah (Bonnie Hunt) remember these events. Kasdan commented, “The clever storytelling twist at the end has always made it difficult to continue their tale.

Regarding these challenges, Kasdan underscored his admiration for the initial film and its historical significance. In essence, he mentioned, “Ever since we worked on Welcome to the Jungle, we’ve been keen on preserving a small connection to the original film.” Moreover, he revealed that the team is still brainstorming strategies to incorporate characters from the original production while staying faithful to the narrative.

Enthusiasts of the initial film have longed for appearances by Dunst and Hunt in the revamped series, and Hunt’s recent collaboration with Kasdan on “Red One”, a festive action movie, has sparked rumors about her possible comeback to Jumanji. On the other hand, another figure from the original production, Nora Shepherd (Bebe Neuwirth), featured in Jumanji: The Next Level, yet no connections were established with Judy or Peter.

The upcoming “Jumanji” film, due out in 2026, will be directed by Kasdan and serve as the final chapter in a trilogy that started in 2017. The release was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Sony has officially set a date for December 11, 2026. Fans are excitedly anticipating updates on the movie, hoping for links to the cherished 1995 original.
