As a devoted theater enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that I am absolutely thrilled to witness Whoopi Goldberg‘s return to Broadway as the iconic Miss Hannigan in Annie! Having seen her brilliant performances in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, I can only imagine the magic she will bring to this timeless role.
Actress Whoopi Goldberg is gearing up to reprise her iconic role as Miss Hannigan in the New York City leg of the Annie national tour. In an interview with People before the show’s premiere, Goldberg confessed that it had been quite some time since she last performed on Broadway, having made her debut 40 years ago and finding herself a bit rusty in recent times.
She admitted to being a bit out of practice, but promised improvement soon. For now, she felt like an old machine squeaking as it moves,” she confided to the media outlet. The musical is set to debut on December 11 and will run from December 4 through January 5, 2024, at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Additionally, its production will include stops in Baltimore, Indianapolis, San Francisco, and other locations.
Derived from the 1924 comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” by Harold Gray, the heartwarming Broadway musical “Annie” has captured many hearts. This story revolves around a young orphan who crosses paths with billionaire Oliver ‘Daddy’ Warbucks, embarking on an adventure to discover her long-lost family.
Over the years, the musical has undergone numerous transformations for different mediums. Carol Burnett played the lead role in the 1982 adaptation, while Kathy Bates took on Miss Hannigan in a TV movie from 1999. The original film’s illustrious cast featured Victor Garber, Audra McDonald, Alan Cumming, and Kristin Chenoweth.
Besides Annie, Goldberg has played numerous renowned roles, such as the lead character in the 2003 Broadway revival of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and in the 1996 Broadway reprise of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
Despite Goldberg’s attempts to portray negative roles in her career, people have consistently rejected this idea. In an interview, the EGOT winner expressed her frustration by saying, “I keep trying to make myself into monsters and villains, but people keep saying ‘no,’ ” to the media outlet. Interestingly, Goldberg found enjoyment in playing the character Annie.
She continued by saying, “‘Apparently, they’ve decided not to heed anyone else’s advice and are offering you this role instead,'” she noted. Additionally, she commended the “excellent” young actresses who portray the orphans. “They’re all terrific actors,” she enthused.
