Why Is Wednesday Crying Black Tears? This Season 2 Psychic Mystery, Explained

On Wednesdays, the second season’s first part has arrived at Nevermore Academy, brimming with fresh mysteries to explore. In the initial episode, Wednesday finds herself grappling with issues concerning her psychic abilities, specifically, tears of a dark hue streaming from her eyes. Oh dear. What causes these black tears from Wednesday and how will they impact her? The answers came swiftly for this query.

To begin with, Wednesday locates the infamous serial killer known as the Kansas City Scalper, using her unique abilities. She justifiably subjects him to torture, but during this time at his residence, she experiences a psychic breakdown and weeps tears that are black in color. Thing notices this strange occurrence, yet she brushes it aside as a mere psychic malfunction and moves on with her life. This involves her going back to the “crime scene,” which is also known as Nevermore Academy.

She has become a well-known figure now, no longer the sole Addams on campus. Her brother Pugsley is also there, and her mother Morticia resides in a gardener’s cottage (originally inhabited by Mrs. Thornhill) on campus, at the behest of Principal Dort who wishes for her to take over as the new chair for the gala. Once she has settled into her home and is alone, Morticia leafs through a book that once belonged to her late sister Ophelia, whom she describes as similar to Wednesday. The book contains some unsettling sketches, including one of a young woman who appears to be in distress, with dark tears streaming from her eyes.

Towards the finale of the episode, Enid gently taps Wednesday’s shoulder, triggering an unintended psychic experience within her. This vision showed Wednesday foreseeing Enid’s demise, which she believes is her fault. As a result, Wednesday shudders and weeps dark tears on the ground while Enid and Morticia look on. In the subsequent episode, Wednesday stirs from her slumber to find Morticia beside her. Morticia explains that the black tears are a sign of psychic overexertion, which occurs when one misuses their abilities. Curious about how to stop them, Wednesday inquires and Morticia advises her to abandon Goody’s book of spells as it poses risks.

In this retelling, I’ll express it from Wednesday’s perspective: Morticia advises me to be patient with my upcoming guide and refrain from employing my abilities as a weapon. This advice irks me significantly, fostering an underlying tension between us. My mother seems determined to shield me from my own narrow focus and headstrong nature.

Interestingly, I find myself struggling to utilize my psychic powers altogether. Instead of deterring me, this challenge propels me further into Goody’s book, hoping to regain what I lost. The urgency stems from the possibility that my gift could save Enid’s life and unravel the recent string of murders.

Naturally, my mother seizes the book as a means of control, fearing it will steer me towards danger. She fears that I might follow in Ophelia’s footsteps, who vanished 20 years ago after being driven to madness. Ophelia was once like me-a young woman with extraordinary abilities.

In episode three, Wednesday reveals her vision about Enid to Morticia at last, leading to heated discussions regarding Goody’s book and Wednesday’s unchecked powers. Their confrontation culminates in an intense duel, which Morticia ultimately prevails in, taking the book and eventually destroying it. The conclusion is grim as the Hyde resurfaces and Wednesday gets hurt after being flung out of a window. We’ll have to stay tuned for season two Part 2 of Wednesday to find out more about her powers and whether those ominous tears will reappear again.
