As a devoted fan, I’m sharing that I, along with Eminem’s publishing company Eight Mile Style, have taken legal action against Meta Platforms – the corporation behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The suit, officially filed on May 30 and obtained by E! News on June 3, claims that Meta has violated our copyrights.
Eminem (whose real name is Marshall Mathers) alleges that Meta has been using 243 of his songs illegally across its various platforms. As indicated in the court documents, features like Original Audio and Reels on Meta make it simple for users to extract bits of Eminem’s music without obtaining proper permissions first.
The legal action claims these tools facilitate and motivate users to unlawfully utilize the songs of Eight Mile Style in their videos, often without giving credit or obtaining the necessary permissions. Consequently, Eight Mile Style is pursuing compensation exceeding $109 million as a consequence.
Why is Eminem suing Meta platforms?
Eminem claims that Meta unlawfully used his music, copying, storing, and benefiting financially from it without his permission. The lawsuit seeks compensation for the devaluation of his copyrights, potential earnings lost, and any gains Meta made due to this violation.
Additionally, he requested a total of $109,350,000 in maximum statutory damages for each song on all Meta platforms, which amounts to $150,000 per song.

Instead, the amount he sought was a maximum of $109,350,000 in statutory damages for each song across all Meta platforms, equating to approximately $150,000 per tune.
The lawsuit indicates that users can effortlessly find and employ Eminem’s music tracks on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram within their Reels or Stories. However, without obtaining necessary licenses or giving credit, these actions potentially undermine the worth of the initial recordings. In the documentation, Eminem’s team itemizes each of the 243 songs in his catalog, including popular tunes like Love the Way You Lie.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but resonate deeply with Eminem’s words about the healing power of music, especially rap. In an interview on Shade 45’s Sway In The Morning back in June 2022, he beautifully captured the essence when he said, “One of the wonderful aspects of rap is that you can pour so much of your life into it.” For me, and I believe for him too, it serves as a therapeutic outlet – a sanctuary where we’ve always found solace. His music often reflects his tumultuous childhood and personal battles, offering us a glimpse into his soul.
As a staunch advocate for my creative work, I find myself once more standing up for the protection of my musical legacy – this time by taking legal action against Meta. Over the years, I’ve consistently demonstrated my resolve in defending my music rights through various court battles, be it over copyright or royalties. This recent lawsuit is simply another chapter in that ongoing saga.
