Why Gamers Can’t Stop Playing Where Winds Meet

After launching in China last year, the game Where Winds Meet is now available globally. I’ve been watching this game for a while, and while I had some concerns, I was really drawn to the idea of a large open world with exciting combat inspired by wuxia stories. What’s even better is that all the content – the entire single-player story, plus both the PvE and PvP modes – is completely free to play, with no paid content restrictions.

It seemed almost too good to be true, but the game is exactly as promised: you won’t need to spend real money to advance. After just a few days of release, it’s already incredibly popular, reaching 2 million players in the last 24 hours – a remarkable feat considering some players were hesitant before launch. Currently, over 180,000 people are playing, with a peak of nearly 194,000 players.

Wow, I’m really impressed with how well Where Winds Meet is doing! It quickly became a huge hit on Steam, cracking the top 5 most played games, and it was even in the top 3 on PlayStation Network in seven different areas. Plus, it’s been selling incredibly well on Steam too – consistently in the top 7! It’s clear that Everstone’s hard work is really paying off. I’m curious to see if they can keep this momentum going, but right now, it feels like one of the most captivating games released this year – I can’t stop playing!

So, why is it so appealing? Primarily, it’s free to play without restricting core gameplay for those who don’t spend money. From the moment you start, you’re immersed in a vast open world – currently featuring two large areas – brimming with things to do. You can explore Qinghe and Kaifeng, two beautifully designed and visually stunning starting locations.

The animations and character expressions aren’t top-of-the-line, but they’re good enough. The game’s story revolves around finding the “Gold-Making Vessel,” a treasure with a dark secret, and the narrative will likely expand with future updates and cutscenes. However, the real focus of the game is the variety of other activities you can enjoy outside of the main story.

The game features main side missions that change depending on the location, grouped into different chapters. These can be quite lengthy, sometimes taking over thirty minutes to finish. They’re engaging and often lead to beautiful scenery and challenging boss battles. Alongside these are random encounters – some quick, others surprisingly detailed and even better than the main story missions. You’ll discover these just by exploring the world, finding hidden dungeons and triggering events as you enter. The game really shines with its incredible attention to detail and varied environments, and it’s all executed flawlessly.

In a July interview with TechRadar, Everstone’s lead designer, Chris Lyu, discussed their goals for Where Winds Meet. He explained that they were aiming to create a truly unique game, and shared the challenges they encountered while developing it, as well as what they learned from player feedback during testing.

Lyu explained that their main aim with this project was to build a deeply engaging and immersive world for players. They faced many challenges during development, as no other studio had attempted a game quite like it, leaving them with limited examples to learn from.

The game has received a really positive reaction, with many players leaving great reviews. People have been sharing videos of themselves playing, which sparked a lot of discussion online. We also saw a strong response to the story; many players were deeply moved, even crying during emotional scenes, and that really got people talking about the game.

The game also includes lots of small tasks and errands. Some are quick chats, while others send you exploring nearby areas. You can think of these as side quests – things to do when you’re looking for a break or want to discover more of the map. Plus, there are around a dozen world bosses, some of which are quite difficult until you reach a certain level, in addition to the bosses you’ll face during the main story.

Even learning powerful martial arts is connected to side quests, and you can unlock them in various ways – like joining a faction or completing a sneaky dungeon heist to steal the necessary skills. Basically, everything you do contributes to your character’s growth, and the game constantly gives you rewards like money and items to improve your gear. This constant loop of missions and rewards is a big reason why I, and many others, found the game so addictive.

Honestly, the coolest thing about this game isn’t just that it has combat, but how fun the fights actually are! It’s not just the usual swords and spears, either. In Where Winds Meet, you can fight with some seriously stylish weapons – I’m talking umbrellas, fans that can slice you up, and even a rope dart! It makes everything so much more exciting.

As I noted in my review, the game focuses a lot on improving your character and gear – you’ll be constantly upgrading everything you can. Each martial arts style, which acts like a different weapon, has unique and really fun special moves.

While the movements of non-player characters aren’t great, the fighting animations are fantastic. Every hit and action feels powerful and exaggerated, which perfectly suits the game’s style. The Arena mode, where you can battle other players, is incredibly fun, offering different ways to compete or just explore the world with a friend. The game offers a huge amount of freedom and things to do in its detailed world, and it’s amazing that it’s all available for free.

While some tasks can become repetitive, as a big fan of thoroughly exploring open-world games, I didn’t find this game too grindy, especially in the beginning. The game’s economic system is quite complicated, and it introduces a lot of different mechanics all at once, which can feel overwhelming. However, if you’re willing to learn the ropes, you might discover one of the year’s best action RPGs.

I get that free-to-play games aren’t for everyone, and that’s perfectly okay. But for those of us who love exploring beautiful worlds, battling challenging enemies, and just generally having a good time, Where Winds Meet doesn’t just deliver – it exceeds all expectations.
