Why Frozen 3 First Look Sparks Fan Theories About Norse Mythology Connection? Explained

As a dedicated follower of Disney’s Frozen franchise for over a decade now, I must say I am thrilled beyond words about the upcoming Frozen 3! Ever since I watched the first film back in 2013, I have been enchanted by the magical world of Arendelle and its characters. The announcement of the third installment has only rekindled my childhood love for the series.

The Disney’s Frozen series, one of its most successful ventures, has consistently built upon its past achievements. In the year 2019, Disney introduced a sequel titled “Elsa and Anna,” where these characters embark on a journey beyond Arendelle to explore their individual identities and relationship further. Following two blockbuster movies, a stage musical spin-off, and an entire Frozen-themed land in Disneyland Hong Kong and Tokyo’s DisneySea, Disney announced the upcoming third installment of the Frozen saga.

As a longtime fan of Disney animation and someone who grew up with the original Frozen movie, I was beyond excited to hear that a third installment is in the works at this year’s D23 exposition. With Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, and Zootopia 2 also announced, it seems like Disney is really stepping up their game when it comes to sequels.

Initially set for release in the year 2026, Frozen 3 has been moved to 2027 instead. The principal actors, such as Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad, are expected to reprise their beloved roles as Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf respectively. The narrative is anticipated to build upon the events of Frozen 2, though no new characters have been announced yet.

Jennifer Lee, the producer, tantalized viewers with hints about future installments, stating, “After ‘Frozen 2,’ we still have many unanswered questions. In fact, quite a few. That’s why we needed two films to tell this story.” This comment laid the foundation for Frozen 3, and it appears that she may have also confirmed the rumors about a fourth Frozen movie being in development. At D23, fans were given a sneak peek of concept art, depicting Anna on a brown horse and Elsa on a white one, both heading towards a castle shimmering in the sky, reminiscent of Sleeping Beauty’s aesthetic.

Enthusiasts swiftly examined this concept art to speculate about the plot of Frozen 3. Many focused particularly on the floating city and the ominous character in the lower right corner, suggesting that the movie might delve into Norse folklore for its narrative basis.

“@swifferstruggle” exclaimed on Twitter, “Wow, it’s Loki!” suggesting a potential antagonist. This idea was widely shared, as @sunsolveig added, “Given that Frozen draws inspiration from Norwegian culture and folklore, I think this film might delve into Norse mythology due to the shadow at the bottom right having a vague Viking or Loki feel.”

Others contended that the city depicted in the sky was symbolic of Valhalla, a legendary afterlife for Viking warriors. With great enthusiasm, @daeshyr exclaimed on Twitter, “Frozen 3 is going to be spectacular, and I have compelling evidence!” Breaking down details from the concept art, they shared their thoughts: “In the artwork’s backdrop, we see VALHALLA, with silhouettes of two Vikings and a larger one in the river. I believe the movie will further explore the Norse mythology within this universe, promising an amazing experience!”

In 2013, the first Frozen film hit theaters, drawing inspiration from Hans Christian Anderson’s timeless tale, The Snow Queen. This movie immediately became a box office sensation, earning $1.28 billion globally. At its release, it ranked as the fifth highest-grossing film ever made, and now, it holds the 22nd spot. The sequel, Frozen 2, debuted in 2019 and surpassed the original by raking in an impressive $1.45 billion at the global box office. Currently, it stands as the 14th highest-grossing movie worldwide, having previously reached the No. 10 position.
