Why Does Wind Hashira Sanemi Hate His Younger Brother? The Shinazugawa Siblings’ Tragic Story Explained

As an ardent fan of this captivating manga series, I find myself deeply moved by the heart-wrenching tales of the characters in Demon Slayer, and none more so than the tragic story of Sanemi Shinazugawa and his younger brother Genya. Their bond, forged in pain and strained by grief, has left me on the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting each new chapter.

The anime Demon Slayer delivers a powerful emotional impact through its characters’ pasts, and this is particularly evident in Sanemi Shinazugawa of the Wind Hashira and his sibling Genya. Throughout Kibutsuji Muzan’s thousand-year rule, numerous lives have been lost to his cruelty, including those of the Shinazugawa family.

Following the tragic loss of most of their family members, leaving only the two brothers, one would assume their bond would grow stronger. However, that’s not what happened for Sanemi and Genya. Alongside their family, they also lost trust in each other. Nevertheless, there seems to be a deeper layer to their tale than what is initially apparent.

Sanemi and Genya’s traumatic past

One fateful night, the close-knit bond between brothers weakened dramatically when their mother transformed into a demon. This tragic event sparked a rampage, resulting in the deaths of all but two siblings – Sanemi and Genya. In the darkness that night, Genya was unable to identify who was responsible for the massacre.

In his sorrow and bewilderment, Genya, who didn’t realize demons were present, stumbled upon their mother’s charred body near Sanemi as the sun rose. Overwhelmed by grief and confusion, he incorrectly assumed that Sanemi had murdered their mother and lashed out at him with harsh words.

Stricken with sorrow and bewilderment after being hurt by their mother while defending Genya, Sanemi began to pull away emotionally, growing detached and aloof towards his brother. For a long time, their bond remained tense as they both grew resentful and aggressive, channeling their pain into shielding themselves from additional heartache.

For Sanemi, the misfortune spurred a quest for refining and mastering his power, culminating in him assuming the role of a Hashira to prevent other families from experiencing the same hardship. On the other hand, Genya came to terms with his error, only to discover that his brother had already moved away.

Despite Genya’s recent efforts to reconcile, they have proven fruitless. Their latest encounter during the Hashira Training arc seemed to widen the chasm between them even more. Sanemi was seen attacking Genya fiercely, and it was only due to Tanjiro’s quick actions that things didn’t get worse.

Does Sanemi truly hate his brother?

Indeed, it may seem like he’s harboring hostility or even hate towards his younger sibling, but this could conceal much deeper feelings. Both brothers have been significantly affected by their past traumas, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.

Sanemi, who had been a loving and gentle elder sibling, stepped up to help care for his family along with their mother following the death of their abusive father. He came to understand that life could be merciless and ruthless, leading him to think he needed to harden himself to endure. This toughness appears to be the source of his harsh behavior towards Genya, as Sanemi wanted his younger brother to be just as resilient.

Sanemi made tremendous efforts to safeguard his remaining family from demons, and when Genya eventually joined the Demon Slayer Corps years later, it could have seemed like a rejection of all his hard work, stirring his anger. Ever since then, Sanemi has been attempting to persuade Genya to leave the Corps, hoping to keep him out of harm’s way despite its inherent dangers.

Upon learning that Genya was devouring demons for their abilities, owing to his weak swordmanship, I, Sanemi, took a desperate approach to deter him from this perilous course by attempting to instill fear within him. Regrettably, my efforts only served to worsen the bond between us.

In the unfolding story of the Infinity Castle, I find myself drawn into the lives of these brothers. As their journey progresses, they’re forced to join forces. This collaboration, unexpected yet necessary, brings about a deeper understanding and appreciation for each other. They soon discover that their individual strengths, when united, create an indomitable alliance. This realization fosters a mutual respect that was previously unseen, enriching their bond and setting the stage for future success.

As the climactic fight against Muzan grows more intense, it’s unclear if they will both make it through alive to fully experience their rekindled connection. The answer won’t be revealed until the last chapters of the Infinity Castle arc are published.
