Why Did Val Kilmer Have to Use a Voice Box After Throat Cancer Diagnosis? Find Out As Actor Passes Away at 65

After receiving a throat cancer diagnosis, Val Kilmer‘s voice was changed permanently due to a necessary emergency tracheotomy procedure.

In 2014, the well-known actor, famed for his performances in Top Gun and Batman Forever, was diagnosed with throat cancer following regular bouts of coughing up blood. Consequently, he was urgently taken to the hospital, where medical professionals carried out two emergency tracheotomies, as reported by Daily Mail.

A tracheotomy involves making an opening in the neck and windpipe so a breathing tube can be placed. Similarly, Kilmer experienced both chemotherapy and radiation treatment, leading to his tongue swelling and obstructing his lymphatic ducts.

Following these treatments, he needed to cover the opening in his windpipe to articulate clearly. Later, in his 2021 Prime Video documentary titled Val, he confessed his hardships by saying, “Speaking and being understood is challenging.” Kilmer further disclosed in 2020 that he had been cancer-free for four years, but the tracheotomies fundamentally impacted his capacity to speak.

After his operations, Kilmer had to use an electronic voice box instead of his own voice due to the loss of it. This device runs on batteries and generates sounds to produce speech, often utilized by individuals dealing with throat cancer.

In a 2020 interview on Good Morning America, Kilmer reassured his fans by saying, “I’m in good shape. I actually feel much better than I might seem.

In my experience, life often presents us with unexpected hurdles, and for me, one such challenge was dealing with speech difficulties that made eating normally quite a struggle. As a result, I needed to be fed through a tube. Yet, despite these hardships, I maintained a positive outlook, viewing this new adversity as just another life lesson to conquer, much like the numerous obstacles I’ve faced before.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share the news about a remarkable leap in technology: the revival of Kilmer’s voice by artificial intelligence (AI), a creation that feels almost surreal! The masterful minds at Sonantic, a London-based AI company, developed a software that meticulously studied his old recordings, enabling them to produce a digital replica of his unique timbre.

Through this process, Kilmer found it easier to converse authentically. Showing his appreciation, he expressed, “I’m deeply thankful to everyone at Sonantic for restoring my voice in a manner I could have only dreamed of.

Kilmer too emphasized the significance of communication, asserting that as humans, our capacity to communicate lies at the heart of our existence. The impact of throat cancer has made it challenging for others to comprehend him. However, an AI-generated voice offered him a means to articulate himself in a manner that felt genuine and familiar.

In the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick, Kilmer’s AI-generated voice was utilized for his last on-screen performance. He returned to his role of Iceman, working alongside Tom Cruise. Instead of spoken dialogue, his character communicated through typed messages displayed on a screen.

In a touching instance, artificial intelligence technology revived his voice, stirring emotions among fans. This time was particularly poignant as Iceman offered advice to Maverick about letting go of the past.

Following the completion of filming, Kilmer withdrew from the limelight, abstaining from attending red carpet events since the year 2019. Yet, he maintained contact with his fans by uploading artwork and uncommon selfies on Instagram. Just under two months before his demise, he posted a video from 2021, which featured artist David Choe.
