As a lifestyle expert with years of experience in the entertainment industry, I must say that Sony’s approach to their Spider-Man universe seems to be a classic case of missed opportunities. Having worked with various studios and having seen numerous projects succeed or fail based on creative decisions, I can confidently say that the lack of fan-favorite characters like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy, and Mary Jane in Sony’s spin-offs was a misstep.
It’s generally understood that people decide for themselves if they enjoy a project, and it appears Sony may have made a similar assumption with their Spider-Man universe. According to reports, Sony might have emphasized more on Marvel’s live-action Spider-Man characters like Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, but they seem to have believed that the audience preferred something different based on their perception, as suggested in an article by GamesRadar+.
According to a recent article by Variety, it was possible that Sony’s standalone Spider-Man film might have included additional characters like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy, and Mary Jane. This is because the studio’s contract with Disney, as reported, did not apparently restrict them from doing so.
It seems that it was a possibility for well-loved Spider-Man characters like Venom, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter to be present in Sony’s movies such as the Venom series, but based on reports, the studio felt that the audience might not have been interested in seeing these characters outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Sony opted to place greater emphasis on the villains within this universe after some initial success with Venom. Remaining committed to this approach, they’ve kept their focus there. However, following the first Venom movie, a brief appearance of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was included in the post-credit scene. Nonetheless, subsequent Venom films have noticeably omitted any heroes related to Spider-Man.
In simpler terms, according to Jeff Block, an Exhibitor Relations analyst, Sony faced a setback when Venom succeeded. They believed they could easily expand other characters based on this success. However, excluding Spider-Man from these movies turned out to be a critical mistake for them.
It seems that Block’s assessment might have been accurate, considering Sony’s latest endeavor, Kraven the Hunter, was met with underwhelming responses and poor ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet, it’s worth noting that Sony has had a successful project: the animated Spider-Verse series. This series showcases different iterations of Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, as pointed out by GamesRadar+.
