As a seasoned gamer and a devoted MCU fan with over two decades of superhero movies under my belt, I must say that this latest announcement has left me quite intrigued, to put it mildly. The prospect of Robert Downey Jr., aka Tony Stark, reprising his role but as the notorious Doctor Doom? That’s a twist so unexpected it could rival the best plot twists in gaming’s most epic RPGs!
2021’s San Diego Comic-Con proved to be an exhilarating event. The audience was given a sneak peek at upcoming films like ‘Thunderbolts’ and ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps.’ Yet, the most striking revelation of the evening revolved around the ‘Avengers’ series.
Kang Dynasty,’ has been renamed to ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ reflecting a shift in the main antagonist for the Multiverse storyline.
Previously, I noted that responses have been diverse. A poll by IGN uncovered that more than half of the fans express dissatisfaction with RDJ reprising a new character. Consequently, we’re delving into potential explanations for Marvel Studios’ decision to tread this risky route, taking into account the profound emotions attached to one of their most impactful moments in the whole cinematic universe.
The Strength of Nostalgia
As a hardcore gamer of superhero movies, I’ve seen how these films have been weaving in variants and cameos lately. ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ showcased several legacy characters, causing quite a stir among viewers. Personally, I found it intriguing, but others felt differently.
Furthermore, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ featured several iconic characters from the past, with Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine playing a pivotal part. It appears that Marvel Studios understood that reintroducing classic characters or actors can be favorably received, as long as their comeback storyline is significant and their role is substantial.
At first, Feige was against Wolverine’s comeback, but he’s recently indicated a possibility if Iron Man or Captain America are reintroduced carefully. The prospect of Robert Downey Jr.’s return sets it apart from ‘The Flash’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’. Marvel Studios is ready to venture into that risk, believing they can steer clear of the mistakes made in those earlier productions.
The casting aligns well with the context of the source material
Introducing Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom into the MCU could be complex, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be. There are many links between Iron Man and Doctor Doom in the comic books, and we believe that Marvel could tackle the transition by adapting stories such as ‘Demon in an Armor’ or ‘Infamous Iron Man.’ This way, they can seamlessly integrate RDJ’s Doctor Doom into the existing MCU narrative.
Moreover, considering a possible modification of the ‘Time Runs Out’ narrative, in which Doom seemingly “preserves” existence. This plotline may not be closely linked with Iron Man, but we anticipate that Marvel will manage the transformation skillfully.
Robert Downey Jr. nearly played Doctor Doom once before
As a lifelong Marvel fan and someone who has followed Robert Downey Jr.’s career closely, I must say that discovering he auditioned for Doctor Doom in ‘Fantastic Four’ back in 2005 was a fascinating revelation. Having seen both the movie and Downey’s exceptional performance as Iron Man, it’s hard not to wonder how things might have turned out differently if he had landed the role of the villainous Doom. It’s always intriguing to think about alternate paths in an artist’s career, especially when it involves such a talented actor like Downey Jr. I can only imagine what a different take on the character he would have brought to the table.
It’s interesting to note that Robert Downey Jr., who was determined to play a certain role, had to build his reputation as the fan-favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe character first before eventually getting the part he initially aimed for.
Fans have been eager for Robert Downey Jr. to return
Ever since Iron Man’s demise in ‘Endgame,’ a large number of fans have been pushing for Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Kevin Feige, the head honcho, has made it clear that this isn’t feasible, as it might lessen the impact of the character’s selfless act to save mankind. But what if a middle ground could be found?
Fans might see Robert Downey Jr. return as a different character instead of Iron Man, bypassing his death – exactly what’s happening in the MCU. The universe needs a significant and secure boost after a series of underperforming films and the drama surrounding Kang the Conqueror played by Eric Masters. RDJ as Doctor Doom could help fans overcome these challenges.
