Why Did Marlon Wayans’ Family Leave 1990 Comedy Series In Living Color? Comedian REVEALS

As a lifestyle expert reflecting upon the journey of Marlon Wayans, I find his story to be both inspiring and enlightening. His unwavering loyalty towards his family, even at the peak of success, is a testament to the values that truly matter in life. The decision to walk away from In Living Color, despite the lucrative offers, speaks volumes about his character.

Comedian Marlon Wayans shared insights during the Club Shay Shay podcast on September 4 about why his family chose to leave “In Living Color” while the show was enjoying great success. This popular sketch comedy series, conceived by his brother Keenen Ivory Wayans, first aired on Fox in 1990 and ran for five seasons until it ended in 1994.

According to Wayans, the reason they chose to leave was due to the impact it was having on Marlon’s brother, Keenan Ivory Wayans’s financial situation. As Marlon recollected, “I remember when we parted ways with In Living Color. Fox intended to rebroadcast the show, and Keenen exclaimed, ‘Absolutely not, you can’t do this to me.’ The family prioritized Keenan’s well-being over financial gain, and we all decided to depart together.”

Initially, the program served as a springboard for several well-known celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Jim Carrey, and Jamie Foxx. However, it later transformed into a family show when Marlon and Keenen were accompanied by their siblings Damon Wayans, Kim Wayans, and Shawn Wayans.

Instead of staying on the series due to ‘big checks,’ Marlon chose to follow his family’s decision and leave the show, as they stood behind his brother.

He went on to clarify that season 5 of In Living Color took an unusual direction, bringing up Biz Markie’s participation. He pointed out that while Chris Rock was incredibly talented, he came in at an unfortunate time and wasn’t able to rescue the show because its authentic spirit had already slipped away, a fact that both the cast and audience were aware of.

Following his exit from the program, Marlon reportedly claimed he had minimal funds, stating he had approximately $1,600 in total – $700 in the bank and $900 – which apparently motivated him even more. This situation eventually opened doors for him to team up with the iconic Wayans Bros., whose show ran for five seasons from 1995 to 1999.

Later on, they both played significant roles as writers and actors in the initial two installments of the Scary Movie series, which turned out to be quite successful.

These movies came out in the years 2000 and 2001. In the year 2000, he took on the characters Tyrone C. Love in Requiem for a Dream and Snails in Dungeons & Dragoons. Besides acting in TV shows and films, Marlon has also been a host on YouTube.
