As a seasoned gamer and avid movie buff with over two decades worth of comic book cinema under my belt, I can confidently say that Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine is nothing short of iconic. His performances have been the cornerstone of countless Marvel memories for fans like me. However, upon reading this article, I find myself torn between wanting more and acknowledging when a story should come to an end.
In the recent discussions, it’s undecided if Hugh Jackman will reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Deadpool and Wolverine. While some believe that he should hang up his claws for good after his successful run as Logan, others argue that more superhero adventures could be on the horizon for him. In this article, Mikey Walsh presents the reasons why Jackman’s portrayal of these characters might mark the end of his career as Wolverine. On the other hand, Eric Diaz suggests that this could be just the beginning of Jackman’s tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The finest tales culminate, offering a sense of fulfillment, significance, and closure that incomplete or unfinished narratives lack. That’s what Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine deserves – a fitting conclusion to his time in the role, as it is one of Hollywood’s greatest, most influential stories. And he won’t find a better or more suitable opportunity to conclude the story of Logan than in the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine“. This film is not only one of the most successful movies ever made, but also arguably Jackman’s finest performance as the character. However, the main reason he should bid farewell to the iconic mutant forever is that it would wrap up his story in the most fitting way possible. He will say goodbye as the focus of the world’s most successful franchise, a franchise that exists solely because of him.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as we know it wouldn’t have come into being without Fox’s X-Men movies. Prior to the release of the first X-Men film in 2000, there was uncertainty about whether general audiences would embrace superhero films if they didn’t feature the most iconic comic book characters such as Superman and Batman. Fox took a gamble on Marvel’s mutants, even doubting that audiences would accept comic-accurate superhero outfits at the time. The success of X-Men and its numerous sequels paved the way for the creation of the MCU as we know it today. Essentially, Fox’s franchise demonstrated that viewers could develop an affinity for less popular comic book characters, and its mistakes served as valuable lessons for the MCU to improve upon in the future.
But none of that happens without Jackman, who was a last second replacement as Logan. In a franchise built around a team he was the anchor. Wade Wilson was 100% right in Deadpool & Wolverine when he said Wolverine was “THE X-Man” in his world. Jackman was so important he starred in the only three pure standalone X-Men Fox films.
In essence, his absence would mean no existence for the X-Men franchise; it’d be reduced to a solitary, insignificant film. Conversely, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) wouldn’t exist without the X-Men franchise. It’s as clear as day. Given this, what could be more fitting than for his tale to reach its conclusion and end in an MCU blockbuster that sets records, showcasing a stellar performance? He’s truly reigned supreme. With no higher peak left to conquer as Wolverine, there’s only one way to go – down. Even if he features in Secret Wars, he’ll be just another character amidst many. The MCU spotlight that he owned in Deadpool & Wolverine will never again be his alone. Eventually, the multiverse will reset, and a new actor will step into the role completely.
It’s high time now, following the movie that finally allowed him to don the comics-accurate suit and truly showcased what makes the character so beloved, for him to bid adieu. This isn’t because he doesn’t have more to offer or because we don’t want to see him anymore (we do, selfishly). The top-tier performances deserve a fitting conclusion, and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is not just an exceptional portrayal of actor and character; he has given fans over two decades of delight. More than that, his performance reshaped the course of cinematic history. He’s a staple on the superhero movie Mount Rushmore. Conquering the Marvel Cinematic Universe was the final feat left for him in this role. He deserves a heroic farewell.
Among the most remarkable tales in Hollywood, Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine stands out as one of the greatest. With his exceptional performance, it was long overdue for him to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), considering the MCU owes a significant debt to him. He truly deserves the finest offerings that the MCU has to offer. The MCU can’t give him anything greater than the opportunity to bid farewell while still being the best Wolverine on screen.
Have you still not decided if Hugh Jackman ought to retire as Wolverine? Hold off on your judgment, and consider the points made by Eric Diaz that suggest this could be the beginning of his Marvel Cinematic Universe journey instead.
