David Schwimmer, renowned for his role as Ross Geller in Friends, has shared that he stayed away from hearing the iconic theme song of the series for quite some time. In a conversation on Matt Lucas and David Walliams’ podcast Making a Scene, the actor explained the reason behind his reluctance to connect with the melody that came to symbolize the beloved sitcom.
After the conclusion of FRIENDS, Schwimmer chose not to rewatch the series and instead focused on moving forward. He expressed, “For me, it’s like, I did my part, I’m moving on. I don’t typically go back and revisit.” Interestingly, it wasn’t just watching the show that he avoided; even listening to the Friends theme song was a struggle for him. “To be completely honest,” Schwimmer admitted, “for quite some time, hearing the theme song would elicit a strong reaction from me.” Can you relate? He found himself reacting in a similar way every time he heard it due to its frequent playings.
Matt Lucas playfully referenced the song’s first line, saying “Well, no one ever said life would be this way.” Schwimmer appreciated the humor, confessing that hearing the tune repeatedly on talk shows and interviews just made it more challenging for him to find pleasure in it.
Yet, his viewpoint on the topic shifted significantly when his daughter, from his ex-wife Zoë Buckman, began watching the series around age nine. The sound of her laughter during the sitcom brought about a new outlook for him. “I’d often hear my child laughing while I was making breakfast or doing other things,” he reminisced. “My connection to that song and the show transformed once more.
From 1994 to 2004, the television series “FRIENDS” chronicled the lives of six young adults in New York City. It featured Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry (who later passed away), alongside Schwimmer. Initially, the theme song may have been a challenge for him, but it’s apparent that his relationship with the show has developed over time.
