Why Arkham Asylum And Gotham PD Spinoffs Didn’t Make It To Screens? Find Out As The Batman Director Spilled Beans

As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for cinema and pop culture, I find Matt Reeves’ decision to shelve his planned spinoffs of Arkham Asylum and Gotham PD intriguing. Having followed Reeves’ career closely, I have admired his ability to bring complex characters to life on the big screen.

Batman director Matt Reeves revealed the reason behind dropping two of his projects, Arkham Asylum and Gotham PD, midway. The filmmaker commenced his own framing of The Batman in 2022 with the release of the film starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. In conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker revealed that the projects that he had been working on are currently shelved. Reeves revealed that he had “cool” ideas for the show and hence wanted to make a deal with Warner Bros.

The DC movie boss mentioned plans to broaden his film universe with a new HBO show focusing on Colin Farrell’s character, Oz Cobbs as The Penguin. This series is scheduled to debut on Max in September.

What did Matt Reeves say about two spinoffs getting cancelled?

I, Matt Reeves, shared some disappointing news about putting two exciting projects on hold: Arkham Asylum and Gotham PD spinoffs. While working on “The Batman,” ideas for these shows popped up. I felt drawn to Warner Bros due to the potential for these additional stories. My producing partner, Dylan Clark, and I divided our team between the two projects. HBO executives gave us valuable feedback on incorporating some scenes and aspects from “The Penguin” into our plans.

“According to Reeves, they responded with, ‘We’re fond of your approach and wish to focus more on the main characters.’ He went on to explain, ‘An intriguing aspect of the film is that the primary suspect, who appears to be the Riddler’s target and possibly an informant, could be the Penguin. However, this movie leaves a power void, making it hard for people to recognize the true identity of the Penguin.'”

What was The Batman about?

Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of The Batman in films shattered numerous box office records. Based on the movie’s narrative, “The murder of Gotham City’s mayor prompts Batman to act. Not long after, his probe into the crime uncovers a tangled network of corruption, intertwined with his own haunting past.”

Among the film’s acting ensemble are Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Jeffery Wright, and Andy Serkis, along with some other notable faces.

The movie is available to stream on Netflix.
