Renowned British cameraman Roger Pratt, best known for his contributions to Tim Burton’s Batman and two Harry Potter movies, has sadly passed away at the age of 77.
On January 3, 2025, the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) announced his passing, despite earlier reports stating that he had died in December 2024. Pratt’s demise signifies the loss of a trailblazer in the realm of film cinematography.
Throughout various years of his profession, Pratt garnered acclaim for his contributions to hit movies such as Batman (1989), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005).
Apart from his fame, he was widely recognized for his partnerships with director Terry Gilliam on various projects. These collaborations spanned back to Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Brazil (1985), and 12 Monkeys (1995). His exceptional skills in cinematography, both technically and creatively, played a significant role in shaping the visual aesthetics of contemporary blockbuster movies.
1947 saw the birth of Pratt, in Leicester, United Kingdom, in a family where his father was a parish vicar. Initially leaning towards the church, his fascination with filmmaking was ignited by watching 16mm ‘fact and faith’ films. His educational journey led him to the renowned London Film School, where he honed the talents that would shape his career in cinema.
In a heartfelt recognition, the BSC stated that Roger, a remarkable cinematographer, had been bestowed with our most prestigious award, the Lifetime Achievement Award, in the year 2023.
His contributions to filmmaking will be remembered for a long time, as he played significant roles in movies such as Troy (2004), Chocolat (2000), and The Karate Kid (2010). Pratt earned an Academy Award nomination for his work on The End of the Affair (1999). He has bequeathed a substantial cinematic heritage.
