Who Was Nora Aunor? Remembering the Legendary Filipina Actress After Her Death at 71

As a devoted admirer, I’m heartbroken to share the devastating news: Filipino screen legend Nora Aunor has left us at 71 years old. Her family confirmed her passing via social media updates on Wednesday, though details regarding the cause are still unknown.

In a touching eulogy, Ian De Leon described his mother, Aunor, as an endless wellspring of “loving acceptance, courage, and comfort,” and the very essence of their family.

Nora Cabaltera Villamayor, who hails from the neighborhood of San Francisco in Iriga, Camarines Sur, was born with eight other siblings. She developed a knack for singing under the tutelage of her grandmother, Theresa. Her screen name is a tribute bestowed upon her by her aunt, Belén Aunor.

Aunor’s rise to stardom was not without obstacles; she began by selling peanuts and water at train stations, but her determination led her to become one of the nation’s most prominent figures. Her journey, marked by her debut as a singer in the 1960s following a radio singing contest victory, inspired countless people. She then transitioned into acting and eventually reached the pinnacle of success in the industry. Uniquely among her peers, she worked with four National Artists for Film Awardees: Lino Brocka, Gerardo de Leon, Lamberto Avellana, and Ishmael Bernal.

Aunor boasts a portfolio of more than 200 projects, encompassing films like “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos” (1976), “Ina Ka ng Anak Mo” (1979), “Bona” (1980), “Bulaklak sa City Jail” (1984), and “Muling Umawit ang Puso” (1995). Her 1990 film, “Andrea, Paano ba Ang Maging Isang Ina?”, garnered her multiple Best Actress accolades within the Philippines. In 2012, she clinched the Best Actress award at the Asian Film Awards for her performance in “Thy Womb.

2022 saw her bestowed with the title of National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, the pinnacle honor for acting in our country. Her latest screen performance was in the 2024 film titled Mananambal. Additionally, she graced the screen in the legal drama Lilet Matias, Esq.

On March 30, 2005, the actress was taken into custody at LAX due to suspected possession of about eight grams of methamphetamine and a pipe for smoking it, found in her luggage. However, the charges were dropped in 2017 following her successful completion of a drug treatment program.

In the past, Aunor was wedded to actor Christopher de Leon. Together they raised five children: Ian, Lotlot, Matet, Kiko, and Kenneth. Their marriage ended in 1996 through a divorce.
