17-year-old Nell Smith, who rose to prominence by working with The Flaming Lips, tragically passed away in a car accident. Her extraordinary talent and remarkable artistic achievements have left a lasting impact throughout her life, with her death being announced to the public on October 7th. Remarkably, Nell’s music career took off when she was just 14 years old.
On October 7th, Simon Raymonde from Bella Union made a heartbreaking announcement – we lost a remarkable musical talent who was set to debut her first solo album with the label in 2025.
Raymonde expressed on Instagram that they were deeply saddened to learn about the unexpected and heartbreaking death of their artist and cherished friend, Nell Smith, who passed away in British Columbia over the weekend. Nell was only 17 years old and had been preparing for the release of her debut solo album, which was scheduled for early 2025.
12-year-old Nell, back in 2018, made an impression when she attended a Flaming Lips concert dressed as a parrot, catching the eye of Wayne Coyne. This fleeting encounter sparked a friendship that would grow into significant collaborative projects later on. Wayne Coyne played a pivotal role in nurturing Nell’s musical talents and guiding her through mastering the guitar and various art forms during her fledgling career.
As they prepared to start the initial recording sessions, the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, and Coyne proposed a daring idea: creating a cover album of songs by Nick Cave. Although she wasn’t very familiar with his work, she took up the opportunity and decided to produce “Where the Viaduct Looms” in 2021.
The album contains Nell’s soulful covers of Cave’s songs accompanied by The Flaming Lips. It received great reviews from Coyne, who praised her ability to embrace the true essence of the songs. As per Billboard, Nick Cave also showered her with praises saying, “This version of ‘Girl in Amber’ is just lovely, I was going to say Nell Smith inhabits the song, but that’s wrong, rather she vacates the song, in a way that I could never do.”

More recently, Nell Smith concluded an exceptionally successful Kickstarter fundraising project for her debut solo album, surpassing her 5,000 USD target by an impressive 17,000 USD. Regrettably, before she could commence work on the album, a car accident claimed her life. At a concert in Portland on October 6, Wayne Coyne expressed his grief over the passing of his dear friend and collaborator, Nell Smith.
