As an ardent admirer of the enchanting world of showbiz, I have been captivated by the mesmerizing journey of Mimi Hines, the multi-talented luminary who gracefully danced her way through the realms of singing, comedy, television, and Broadway. Born in Vancouver, Canada, she emerged as a prodigy, performing in nightclubs at just 12 years old! Can you imagine being that talented at such a tender age?
91-year-old Mimi Hines, a well-known singer, comedian, television personality, and Broadway performer who took over from Barbra Streisand in the original cast of Funny Girl, passed away on Monday, October 21. Her attorney, Mark Sendroff, confirmed her death in a statement to several US media outlets, mentioning that she passed away peacefully at her home in Las Vegas.
1933 saw the birth of Hines in Vancouver, Canada. At a tender age, she displayed an early fascination with show business, eventually taking the stage at nightclubs by the time she was just 12 years old. Little did people know that this young performer would later achieve recognition as part of the duo Ford and Hines, teaming up with the late actor and comedian Phil Ford in the entertainment industry.
In 1952, they crossed paths while both were employed at various nightclubs in Alaska. When Hines’ female partner suffered an ankle injury, Ford, who was 19 at the time, took over her role as a substitute. A bond quickly formed, and by 1954, just two years after their initial encounter, they tied the knot, love blossoming between them.
In 1958, Ford and Hines gained widespread recognition following their appearance on The Tonight Show. During this performance, Hines sung Till There Was You from Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man, reportedly leaving Jack Paar in tears.
After that, they frequently appeared on various talk and variety shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show, The Merv Griffin Show, The Dean Martin Show, The Joey Bishop Show, The David Frost Show, The Hollywood Palace, The Garry Moore Show, Pat Boone in Hollywood, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and many others. Additionally, Hines became a popular choice for game show participants.
In 1964, a sitcom pilot named Mimi was filmed, with Hines and Ford portraying the characters who owned a resort hotel. However, the show wasn’t selected for broadcast.
Following numerous successful performances at prestigious venues like showrooms and nightclubs, Hines eventually secured an unparalleled opportunity: portraying Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. Initially, Barbra Streisand was slated to carry on the role, but unfortunately had to withdraw.
In December of 1965, Hines first appeared on Broadway in her role, and she continued to be part of the production for a period of 18 months, concluding on July 1, 1967. Throughout this time, Ford acted opposite her as Eddie Ryan, a character who is both a dancer and director. He took a risk on Hines during the vaudeville era.
She took part in various stage performances which included “I Do, I Do!”, “Prisoner of Second Avenue”, “Sugar Babies”, “Hello Sunshine”, “The Unsinkable Molly Brown”, “No, No, Nanette”, and “Sugar”. Some of these were shared with Ford. (In this version, the original sentence is broken down to make it more readable and easier to understand.)
Apart from being a renowned singer, Mimi Hines has also released multiple albums such as “Mimi Hines Performs” and “Mimi Hines – A Lively Experience.
In 1972, Hines and Ford parted ways in a divorce, but they continued to collaborate on projects, occasionally appearing together. Ford passed away in 2005 at the age of 85. Since they didn’t have any children, only their multitude of fans survive, as stated by Sendroff.
The twosome has just received a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Fame, and the upcoming event will honor Mimi’s life and achievements instead.
