66-year-old musician Jill Sobule passed away following a house fire that occurred early on Thursday morning in Minneapolis, Minnesota. According to accounts, firefighters were alerted about the blaze approximately 5:30 a.m., and upon arrival, they discovered the house was already ablaze. The origin of the fire is yet to be determined.
In a more casual and straightforward manner: Sobule first became widely recognized due to her 1995 chart-topper “I Kissed a Girl,” which resurfaced prominently when Katy Perry released a song with the same name in 2008, as reported by The Mirror.
Initially, Jill didn’t seem to acknowledge the resemblance between the songs, but over time her stance shifted. In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2009, she openly discussed her annoyance with Perry regarding the situation. “In reality,” she stated, “she wrote it with a group of professional writers and was signed by the same person who signed me back in 1995.
She said, “I haven’t brought this up in interviews because I don’t want to come across as bitter or petty, as that’s not my character.” However, she was very open when discussing Perry, stating, “Katy Perry, you ignorant slut, thief of titles, perhaps not good for the LGBTQ+ community, talentless, hardly heard anything else from you, so I’m not sure if you’re talented at all.
Born on January 16, 1959, in Denver, Colorado, Jill Sobule is renowned for her career as an American singer-songwriter. Known for her clever and socially aware lyrics, she has made significant strides in music by advocating for LGBTQ+ representation. One of her most notable achievements includes the 1995 hit single “I Kissed a Girl,” which became one of the first openly queer songs to chart on Billboard. Another popular track of hers is “Supermodel,” which garnered attention after being featured in the movie Clueless.
Throughout a span of nearly three decades, Sobule has put out 12 studio albums, tackling themes such as politics, mental health, and self-identity. She was one of the pioneers in crowdfunding, managing to gather $75,000 for her 2009 album “California Years” through this method.
