James Foley, renowned director known for movies such as Fear, House of Cards, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed, has tragically passed away at the age of 71 following a prolonged struggle with brain cancer. He took his last breath in his residence in Los Angeles.
As reported by Variety, the highly respected movie director spent a year battling brain cancer before passing away on May 6, 2025.
As a seasoned lifestyle guide, I embarked on my directing journey in 1984 with the romantic drama “Reckless,” a project that saw Aidan Quinn and Daryl Hannah grace the screen. Following this, I helmed the production of “At Close Range,” a film that featured Sean Penn and Christopher Walken as its main actors. Notably, Madonna’s hit song “Live to Tell” was also part of this cinematic endeavor. It’s interesting to note that at that time, Madonna and Penn were an item.
Apart from working together on several music videos such as Live to Tell (1986), Papa Don’t Preach (1986), and True Blue (1986) with Madonna, Foley also directed her comedy film, titled Who’s That Girl in 1987. This movie didn’t perform well, but Foley considered it a valuable learning opportunity, stating in an interview with FilmInk, “It was a profound life experience. The first failure is always so surprising.
One of his most recognized films is “Glengarry Glen Ross,” released in 1992. This was based on a play written by David Mamet. Al Pacino earned an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe award for his role in this film. Additionally, the movie boasted an impressive ensemble cast featuring stars like Alec Baldwin, Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris, and Alan Arkin.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary talent of this Brooklyn native who has left an indelible mark on television and cinema. This creative powerhouse demonstrated his unparalleled skill by directing a dozen episodes of House of Cards. The magic he weaved continued with his work on Hannibal, Billions, Wayward Pines, and many more shows. But it’s his direction of the two blockbuster sequels of Fifty Shades of Grey that truly cemented his status as a visionary in my eyes.
James Foley is survived by his brother, Kevin, sisters Eileen and Jo Ann, and nephew Quinn.
