As an ardent admirer of the rock ‘n’ roll legacy, I stand here today with a heavy heart, mourning the loss of a true icon – Jack Russell, the enigmatic voice behind Great White. Born and raised in sunny California, Jack was no ordinary man; he was a product of passion, resilience, and an unwavering love for music that echoed the likes of Steven Tyler and Robert Plant.

Music icon Jack Russell, original member and lead vocalist for the band Great White, has passed away at the age of 63. The news was confirmed by Ms. Doty following an initial announcement made on Russell’s official Instagram account on Thursday.
As per K.L. Doty, who authored Mr. Russell’s memoirs, the reason for his demise was a combination of Multiple System Atrophy and Lewy Body Dementia. Previously, the singer had disclosed his struggles with Multiple System Atrophy, and in July, it was announced that he also suffered from Lewy Body Dementia.
From 1981 to 1996, Jack lent his voice to the band Great White. During this time, he pursued a solo career with great determination, culminating in the release of his debut solo album. However, after embarking on his solo journey, he eventually returned to Great White. The band disbanded in 2001.
On December 5th, 1960, Mr. Russell was born in Montebello, California. Growing up, he was inspired by musicians like Steven Tyler and Robert Plant. During his high school years and beyond, he took on the lead vocal role for various bands. After witnessing Mark Kendall’s live performance, Russell teamed up with guitarist Mark Kendall to establish Great White.
By the early ’80s, a band initially called Dante Fox was playing small venues in Southern California. They transformed into Great White in 1984. In 1987, their hit song “Rock Me” climbed up the Billboard Top 100 Chart, reaching No. 60.
In their third album, “Once Bitten Twice Shy,” which became their most popular song, Great White tasted success. This track earned the band a Grammy nomination in 1990 and reached No. 5 in 1989. Later in 1996, Mr. Russell took a brief leave from Great White to kick-start his solo career, but he rejoined the band in 1999. Unfortunately, Great White disbanded by 2001.
Following a short stint of performing as a solo artist using his own name, he rebranded the band as Jack Russell’s Great White and embarked on tours under that name from 2002 to 2005. In the same year, he put out his second solo album titled “For You.”
In January 2024, the collaborative album between Medusa (a pseudonym) and Tracii Guns of L.A. Guns, titled “Medusa,” was released. This album features songs that Russell had recorded at a studio prior to his retirement and subsequent passing.
