85-year-old Denise Alexander, a well-known actress on ABC’s General Hospital soap opera for many years, passed away at her Burbank, California home on Sunday. Her most memorable role was that of Dr. Lesley Webber, which she portrayed from 1973 to 1984 and revisited several times afterwards.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m sad to share that, although it was announced in May, I learned back in March that a beloved figure in our daytime TV landscape had departed. The executive producer of her show revealed this news, emphasizing that she left an indelible impact on our small screens and played a pivotal role in the history of the program.
Known for her performances in soap operas, she left an impression on daytime TV. Alexander, born in 1939, began acting on the radio as a child and had a long-lasting television career that spanned multiple decades. After moving to Los Angeles with her family, she continued her work in both radio and television there.
Before television, Alexander starred in several radio soap operas. It was in 1960 that she made her first screen appearance in a soap opera. In the mid-60s, she joined the cast of Days of Our Lives as Susan Hunter Martin. At first, she declined the role to focus on her studies, but later agreed and stayed with the series until 1973.
After having a contract disagreement with NBC, she left the soap opera and was quickly hired by ABC to appear in General Hospital. In her new role as Lesley Webber, she became a significant character on the medical drama and played a crucial part in a plotline that boosted the show’s popularity. She received a Daytime Emmy nomination in 1976.
In 1984, Alexander parted ways with General Hospital due to a disagreement over another contract. Fans were upset when the series wrote off her character, leading some to organize protests. However, it was revealed in 1996 that her character had not died as previously thought. She made occasional appearances until 2021. Additionally, she excelled as a photographer outside of her acting career.
Frank Valentini, showrunner at General Hospital, expressed his deep regret upon learning about Denise Alexander’s demise. On screen and off, she shattered boundaries by playing Dr. Lesley Webber, one of the earliest female doctors in daytime television, for close to fifty years.
Valentini commented, “It was truly meaningful for her to return to her role more recently, and I feel privileged to have collaborated with her. On behalf of the entire General Hospital community, I offer my sincere condolences to her family, friends, and devoted fans. May she find peace.
Denise Alexander was predeceased by her husband, Richard A. Colla, who passed away in 2021.
